Black Narcotique — a gourmand composition by Serge Dumonten

Serge Dumonten Black Narcotique is a women's fragrance in eau de parfum concentration, built around a rich blend of sweet, spicy, woody, and smoky accords.

The composition belongs to the oriental and gourmand fragrance families: it is an expressive perfume for those who love warm, full-bodied, and slightly provocative scents.

The fragrance was created by perfumer Serge Duval.

Black Narcotique is defined by an interest in contrasts: the soft sweetness of honey and chocolate meets dry tobacco, spicy cinnamon, and smoky nuances.

As a result, the composition is more than a simple dessert-like sweetness and unfolds in a more layered way.

The character and development of the fragrance

At the heart of the scent is an almond-and-chocolate accord with honeyed roundness and a light boozy nuance of cognac.

Amber lends the composition a warm glow, while heliotrope softens the spicy gourmand base with a powdery floral touch.

As it develops, sandalwood, tobacco, and smoke create a deeper, darker, and cozier backdrop.

Black Narcotique comes across as a fragrance with a noticeable yet not overpowering presence.

Its sillage is considered moderate: the composition is easy to notice near the wearer while maintaining a comfortable distance.

The perfume is especially beautiful in cool weather, when its sweet and woody-smoky nuances become more dimensional.

When and how to wear Black Narcotique

This women's fragrance is well suited to autumn, winter, and cool spring days.

It is appropriate for an evening walk, a date, an intimate event, or a cozy gathering when you want to create a warm and slightly mysterious atmosphere around you.

For the office, Black Narcotique is best applied sparingly, especially in a small space.

The optimal amount is one to two sprays on the skin and the same amount on clothing.

On skin, the fragrance develops more softly and naturally, gradually highlighting its ambery, chocolate, and woody nuances.

Fabric can hold the sweet-spicy trail for longer, so a minimal amount is sufficient for an everyday look.

The brand and its perfumery style

Serge Dumonten is an intriguing brand surrounded by an aura of mystery and legend.

Black Narcotique fits naturally into the house's image thanks to its rich oriental-gourmand palette, in which familiar sweet notes are given a darker, more distinctive frame.

The composition's main distinction lies not in any single note, but in the combination of several expressive facets.

Chocolate and honey provide seductive sweetness, cinnamon and cognac add a spicy boozy accent, while tobacco, smoke, and sandalwood lend greater depth.

The result is a perfume with a cozy, evening-like, and slightly fatalistic mood.

Persistence
The persistence of a fragrance is determined by how long it can be felt. It is a characteristic associated with ingredients that evaporate slowly. Persistence depends on the physical properties of the perfume ingredients—mainly their volatility and environmental factors such as temperature and humidity.

Sillage
Imagine a light cloud of fragrance that, like an aeroplane trail, remains in the air after your appearance. This is the sillage - a subtle or vivid imprint left by the most diffuse element of a perfume composition. The sillage can be almost invisible when it is felt only by you and those around you. Or it can be so expressive that its presence is noticed even long after you have left.

Complexity and depth
The complexity of a fragrance is the number and variety of notes that create a unique composition. A complex fragrance contains many different notes that reveal themselves on the skin. The depth of a fragrance is the richness and intensity of the fragrance. Fragrances with a deep composition include heavy and powerful notes that stay on the skin longer and affect others over long distances.

I love this kind of sweet scent. There's chocolate, cognac, tobacco, honey, heliotrope and almond here - everything is rich, delicious and never boring. I keep wanting to bring my hand to my nose and explore the fragrance further. I would happily wear it too. Unisex. I only didn't buy it because I already have something similar, Maison Tahite Vicious Cacao

I had wanted to try it for a long time, but had been just as hesitant for almost as long. What put me off was that reviews often compared it to Black Phantom by Kilian. Then I moved on to Kristin from the same brand and spent ages unable to decide which size to get. Good thing I eventually settled on the miniature. It is nowhere near Phantom. For me, this is a punishment in perfume form.
The first few minutes are still bearable. You can smell tobacco and dry woods, with cognac somewhere in the background, and a rather bland one at that. Chocolate appears too, but it's bitter and not particularly soft. There's a lot of tobacco. No delight here, just some unpleasant tingling, though I could still wear the opening.
Then everything suddenly turns sweet. Not delicious or ambery, but sticky, heavy and monotonous. It starts to irritate me and literally presses in from all sides.
I first tested it outside, and the wind softened the impression a little. I tried it again at home and couldn't take it anymore: I sent my clothes straight to the wash, put the miniature in a bag and decided to pass it on to someone else.
The only positives are its performance: it's loud, absurdly long-lasting and leaves a very noticeable trail. And the storage pouch is cute

The smell of smoke with chocolate sweetness. Not really my style overall, but it was interesting to test. Sometimes the fragrance turns into cloying cotton candy with a chocolate nuance, while at other times it becomes smoky, tobacco-like and slightly alcoholic. I don't like Dumont's amber. Some compare it to Black Phantom by Kilian, but in my opinion that one is calmer, less bothersome to people around you and smells more expensive
