Identity and Release History

Released in 2007, Van Cleef & Arpels First Eau d'Ete is a summer interpretation of the iconic First fragrance, created in the eau de toilette format.

This release symbolizes the evolution of the brand, known for its Parisian elegance and impeccable taste, and reflects a pursuit of freshness during the hot months.

The brand Van Cleef & Arpels, founded in 1906 on Place Vendôme, initially captivated the world with jewelry creations, then expanded its expertise to perfumery, creating fragrances that, like jewels, emphasize individuality and style.

Positioning and Wearability

As a women's fragrance, First Eau d'Ete is ideal for confident and elegant women who appreciate light freshness in daily life.

With a noticeable sillage, it leaves a vivid impression, but thanks to the eau de toilette concentration, it can be applied generously for a cool sensation in summer heat.

For optimal development, it is recommended to apply the fragrance to pulse points on the skin, such as wrists and neck, so body heat activates the composition.

Since it belongs to the aldehyde and floral families, it is excellent for spring-summer seasons and casual outings, adding a note of sophistication to any look.

If you liked First Eau d'Ete, you might enjoy similar fragrances: Hugo Boss Essence de Femme for floral elegance, Van Cleef & Arpels First Eau d'Ete (2006) to compare with the previous version, or Miu Miu Miu Miu Twist Eau de Toilette for a modern approach to freshness.

Creators and Influence

The creator of this fragrance was Evelyne Boulanger, a perfumer known for her ability to blend classical elements with modern accents.

Her work on First Eau d'Ete reinforces the reputation of Van Cleef & Arpels as a house that creates timeless fragrances inspired by art and elegance.

Description of the composition

Composition Notes

The fragrance pyramid of First Eau d'Ete begins with a playful start, where black currant and mandarin create a refreshing and fruity burst, perfect for the summer mood.

In the heart of the composition, aldehydes unfold, adding airiness and sparkling freshness, while lily and peony bring delicate floral chords, reminiscent of walks through blooming gardens.

The base of the fragrance is rooted in warm and woody notes: ambergris provides sensual depth, and cedar adds stability and natural charm, creating a harmonious finish that lasts long on the skin.

Persistence
The persistence of a fragrance is determined by how long it can be felt. It is a characteristic associated with ingredients that evaporate slowly. Persistence depends on the physical properties of the perfume ingredients—mainly their volatility and environmental factors such as temperature and humidity.

Sillage
Imagine a light cloud of fragrance that, like an aeroplane trail, remains in the air after your appearance. This is the sillage - a subtle or vivid imprint left by the most diffuse element of a perfume composition. The sillage can be almost invisible when it is felt only by you and those around you. Or it can be so expressive that its presence is noticed even long after you have left.

Complexity and depth
The complexity of a fragrance is the number and variety of notes that create a unique composition. A complex fragrance contains many different notes that reveal themselves on the skin. The depth of a fragrance is the richness and intensity of the fragrance. Fragrances with a deep composition include heavy and powerful notes that stay on the skin longer and affect others over long distances.

The smell is simply disgusting. It's somehow soapy and sharp, as if someone decided to douse me with sour lemon. The icy effect, which was supposed to be fresh, actually causes only discomfort. After it, even my teeth ache from this acidity. Honestly, the blackcurrant here is clearly out of place, and it creates a terrible impression. I don't recommend it

I really like this version of the fragrance too, just like the classic one. It's truly floral, but without any harsh notes. The scent is long-lasting and leaves a pleasant trail

This version of the perfume didn't impress me at all. Aldehydes combined with blackcurrant sound extremely uncomfortable for me. Honestly, this combination only evokes negative emotions

The perfume didn't work for me. The blackcurrant just exploded and created some kind of mess, with added aldehydes. The peony smells like soap 😒

The scent is really strange, I didn't like it either. Blackcurrant and aldehydes sound too harsh and disharmonious. In the end, it turns out to be something like floral-scented soap 😕
