A stylist is a person who helps create a complete image. Not only clothes, but also how you sound.

We met with professional stylist Ekaterina to talk about how perfume fits into the overall style of an image and why a fragrance can ruin even the most thought-out look.

Perfume in the stylist's work

Ekaterina said: when she puts together a look for a client, she always asks what perfume she wears. And very often the fragrance does not match the look.

Sometimes a girl dresses minimally, in calm colors, but chooses a cloyingly sweet, candy-like perfume. That's a dissonance. The image ceases to be cohesive.

Fragrance as part of the wardrobe

She compares fragrance to shoes. Shoes can be beautiful, but if they are uncomfortable, the whole day is ruined. Same with perfume. If it's not you, you'll feel out of place.

The fragrance should be the final touch, not random but well thought out.

Fashion passes, style remains. Fragrance: that is style. It is not visible, but it is felt.

5 mistakes in combining fragrance and image

  • Conflict of auras: perfume drowns out the impression of clothing
  • Seasonal mismatch: winter fragrance in a summer dress
  • Too much: aggressive application
  • Blindly following trends: wearing what is fashionable
  • Ignoring context: evening perfume for a business meeting

How a stylist chooses a fragrance for a client

First, she looks at the wardrobe. Understands what colors and textures the client lives in. Then the message the person wants to send to the world is discussed.

After that, a test drive. They take 3 or 4 fragrances that fit the description, and the client wears them for a week. By the end of the week, it is usually clear which one remains.

Stylist's advice: don't buy a fragrance on first impression. Buy samples, wear them one by one for 3 or 4 days. Choose the one you keep reaching for.

Fragrances for different situations

Ideally, have a base of 3 or 4 fragrances for key life scenarios. Workdays, evening outings, romantic meetings, sports.

But if you want one fragrance, let it be universal. Leather-musky or citrus-herbal. Such that it doesn't steal the show.

Fragrance and age

Many believe that with age you need to change your perfume. That is partly true. Skin changes, hormonal background changes, and fragrances unfold differently. But the main thing: the inner state changes. A woman at 25 and at 45 are different people with different needs.

But Ekaterina is against rigid age limits. If it suits you, wear it. The rule "only chypres after 40" is long outdated.

Checklist: how to check if a fragrance is yours

  • You don't get tired of it by evening
  • It doesn't overpower your clothes or clash with them
  • You receive compliments
  • You feel more confident in it
  • It evokes pleasant emotions

Stylists are those people who see the image as a whole. And they are right: a fragrance cannot live separately from style. It either complements or destroys.

I really like Ekaterina's approach: first wardrobe, then fragrance. I would add: choose a fragrance as carefully as you choose a dress for a first date.

In the end, perfume is not just a pleasant smell. It is part of your identity. Part of your style. An extension of you.

Choose your style consciously. Complement it with a fragrance. And remember: your image begins not with clothes, but with what you radiate.
