Shalimar: the history of the first amber fragrance

The world of perfumery never stands still, and 2025 brings us a fresh breath of Eastern storytelling. Meet Conteur – a young perfume house born in the United Arab Emirates, where the traditions of Arabic luxury intertwine with a European approach to fragrance creation. The brand's name translates from French as 'storyteller,' and this is the key to understanding its DNA. Conteur doesn't just release perfumes; it offers an immersion into the atmosphere of stories, each sealed in a bottle.
From its very first days, Conteur declared itself as a carrier of a unique concept: fragrance as a plot. Inspired by the centuries-old traditions of the Arabic tales 'One Thousand and One Nights' and modern poetry, the brand's founders (who remain in the shadows but set the direction) decided to create a series of compositions where each note is a word, and the combination of notes is a completed chapter. To realize this idea, perfumer Miroslav Petkov was invited, whose experience and sense of proportion allowed abstract stories to be turned into tangible, wearable masterpieces.
The name of Bulgarian perfumer Miroslav Petkov is well known to connoisseurs of niche perfumery. He has worked with leading European brands, honing his skills in creating complex, multifaceted pyramids. For Conteur, Miroslav acted as the main storyteller, proposing four starting compositions that became the hallmark of the young house. His style is a balance between a bright Eastern heart and a transparent, modern sound, allowing the fragrances to be suitable both in the hot climate of the UAE and in cool Europe.
Each Conteur fragrance is an independent work. The first collection, consisting of four perfumes, received names that directly reference literary genres: Anecdote, Mythic, Chronicle, and Saga. From the names alone, one can guess that the brand invites us to try on different roles: light irony, epic grandeur, documentary precision, or a long, enveloping narrative.
Conteur – Anecdote is a sparkling, citrus story opening with lively notes of bergamot and green mandarin. At the heart is a duo of jasmine and saffron, giving the 'anecdote' unexpected depth. The base of musk and ambroxan makes the fragrance light but memorable.
Conteur – Mythic is sacred, smoky, with roots in ancient legends. Top notes of pink pepper and frankincense, heart of opoponax and leather, base of oud and patchouli. This is a true odyssey for those unafraid of loud, dense sounds.
Conteur – Chronicle is a chronicle captured in woody tones. Juniper, vetiver, and cedar create the structure of a traveler's notebook, while hints of sage and tonka bean add warmth and coziness. A unisex scent, perfect for business meetings and quiet evenings.
Conteur – Saga is the thickest and most enveloping representative of the collection. Plum, dark chocolate, guaiac wood, and vetiver intertwine into a true saga of Eastern richness. Longevity and sillage are excellent here—the creators spared no expense on quality raw materials and oil concentration.
Despite its young age (the brand was founded in 2025), Conteur has already gathered a community of lovers of beautiful stories. The main audience is women aged 25–45 who are looking not just for a 'tasty smell' but an emotion, a reason for reflection, a pleasant association. The young perfume house from the UAE offers a fundamentally new approach: instead of following fashion trends, it creates its own rhythm of storytelling.
If you are tired of commercial fragrances that all smell the same, Conteur will be a breath of fresh (or rather, hot Eastern) air. Start your acquaintance with any of the four perfumes—and you will understand that every drop here is a letter in a book you want to read endlessly.
Come to the world of Conteur—let yourself become part of the story.
