Delving into the world of perfumery, one cannot overlook the legendary Latvian brand Dzintars, whose name, meaning "Amber," has become a symbol of an entire era. Its history is a fascinating journey from the 19th century through the Soviet period to modernity, filled with creative discoveries and iconic fragrances that are still fondly remembered by connoisseurs.
The brand's roots trace back to 1849, when Riga pharmacist Heinrich Briger established a small perfume and cosmetics production. It all started with soap and candles based on French compositions, but soon the range expanded to include eau de toilette, powder, and even tooth powder. In 1940, after Latvia became part of the USSR, the enterprise was nationalized, and in 1958, it received the name loved by millions—Dzintars.
The golden age of the brand is inextricably linked to the name of the talented perfumer Bronislava Schwarzman. Under her leadership in 1952, a fragrance emerged that became the signature not only of the brand but of all Riga—Rīgas Сeriņi (Riga Lilac). Its elegant Art Deco bottle with floral ornamentation and a delicate, memorable bouquet made this composition a bestseller, produced until the 2010s. In the late 1950s, the world saw the eponymous perfume Dzintars, whose bottle was later immortalized in the company's logo in 2007.
In the 1960s, the brand, becoming the flagship of Soviet perfumery, gifted the world with several more iconic creations. For example, the aldehyde-musk Rīdziniece (Rigan Woman) and its continuation—the mysterious green chypre Rīdzinieces Noslēpums (Secret of the Rigan Woman). The cologne Rīdzinieks (Rigan Man) gained particular fame, which, according to legend, was greatly loved by Leonid Brezhnev. Over time, masters such as Liesma Oshe, Aina Pachko, Milda Gulbe, and Liliya Osipova worked on creating unique accords.
After the dissolution of the USSR, Dzintars actively operated in the Russian market, but in the late 2000s, it decided to reorient towards the West. The company obtained Ecocert certification and began producing premium organic cosmetics. Unfortunately, financial difficulties led to bankruptcy in 2019, and in January 2020, the sale of assets began. However, the brand's heritage, its spirit, and fragrances remain alive in the hearts of fans and in the bottles that have become collectibles.
The philosophy of Dzintars has always been firmly connected to the nature of Latvia, its forests, fields, and, of course, Baltic amber. The brand's fragrances were often inspired by local landscapes and flowers, giving them a special, recognizable soulfulness. This is not just perfumery—it is part of a cultural code, nostalgia for a time when quality and sincerity were valued above all.
The perfumery style of the house can be characterized as classical, with clear structures and accents on floral, woody, and chypre accords. At the same time, Dzintars knew how to create light, playful compositions, especially in later collections. Characteristic notes for many creations included lilac, rose, jasmine, patchouli, oakmoss, and warm musky trails. The brand's fragrances often had good longevity and a recognizable sillage, valued in the Soviet era and still appreciated today.
Over its long history, the brand released many lines, each responding to the demands of its time. Among the most popular collections, still sparking interest, one can highlight Lady Dream with its romantic and feminine images, as in the fragrance Lady Dream Felicity. The Kokete series offered flirtatious and modern compositions, such as Kokete 2 and Kokete 5. Lovers of light, weightless perfumes favored the Voile Léger line, which includes the delicate Voile Léger Lilas.
The Opera collection represented more intense and complex perfumery works, for example, Opera Classic. And in the Hit series, fragrances that became true sales hits are gathered, like the fresh and fruity Fruit Wind. These collections demonstrate the evolution of the brand's style from classic Soviet chypres to more international, accessible formats.
Speaking of Dzintars bestsellers, it is impossible not to mention the legendary Riga Lilac—a symbolic fragrance that introduced many to the brand. No less famous is the mysterious Secret of the Rigan Woman, whose green, slightly cool bouquet captivated hearts. Modern hits, such as Lady Dream Beautiful or Miss 3, prove that the brand knew how to create relevant and appealing compositions for different generations.
Since many Dzintars fragrances have become cult classics and can be found on the secondary market today, the issue of authenticity is particularly relevant. Original bottles from the Soviet period often feature quality glass with clear engraving, even seams, and detailed design. Labels should be neatly applied, with clear font. On later releases (1990s–2000s), look for manufacturer information on the packaging, barcodes, and batch codes. Original production fragrances have a complex, evolving bouquet without sharp chemical notes. If in doubt, compare the bottle and packaging with photos from reliable sources or catalogs.
Despite a difficult fate, Dzintars will forever remain in history as a brand that gave emotions and created fragrances that became part of the personal stories of millions. Its heritage is not just bottles on a shelf, but a whole world of memories, inspired by the beauty of Latvia and the skill of its perfumers.
