Brand Foundation and Philosophy

D.S. & Durga is not just a perfume house, but a true narrative in scents, born in the heart of Brooklyn. Its story began with the creative union of self-taught perfumer David Seth Moltz and his wife, architect Kavi Ahuja Moltz, who became the creative director and muse of the brand. Starting in 2007 with handmade crafting of small batches of perfumes for friends, the couple quickly turned their hobby into a cult niche project, becoming the voice of modern American perfumery.

The philosophy of D.S. & Durga is built on a deep immersion into history, mythology, and nature. David, inspired by the aesthetics of America's colonial past, legends of indigenous peoples, and the vast expanses of the continent, creates scents that are complete narratives. Each bottle is a journey, whether it's a scorched prairie, an occult ritual, or the sound of a violin case in a workshop.

Interesting Facts and Legendary Collaborations

The brand is famous for its ability to turn unexpected ideas into perfumery masterpieces. One of the first bestsellers, Cowboy Grass, was inspired by the image of a cowboy and the scent of dry prairie grass. And the fragrance Bowmakers, as Moltz himself tells, was born accidentally during experiments with woody notes, suddenly coming together into the precise smell of a workshop for making stringed instruments.

D.S. & Durga actively collaborates with other cult names, creating limited collections that become the subject of hunting for collectors. They released a fragrance for Albert Einstein's jacket in collaboration with Levi's, created Spirit of the Glen together with the Scottish whisky distillery The Glenlivet, and in 2018 presented an entire series in co-authorship with Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran, which included compositions like Hungry Like the Wolf and Come Undone.

Collections and Perfumery Handwriting

Although many of the brand's fragrances exist as individual stories, D.S. & Durga also has thematic lines. A vivid example is the collection HYLNDS, which represents a departure from the American theme to cold, mystical landscapes of Northern Europe. It includes atmospheric works such as Pale Grey Mountain, Small Black Lake and Bitter Rose, Broken Spear.

The perfumery style of the house can be described as intellectual and atmosphere-forming. Moltz often uses unexpected chords: dirt, rosin, smoke, wet moss, dry herbs, creating surprisingly realistic and multifaceted images. His perfumes have excellent longevity and a developing trail, highly valued by connoisseurs of niche perfumery.

Most Popular and Cult Fragrances

Acquaintance with the brand often begins with its calling cards. In addition to the already mentioned Cowboy Grass and Bowmakers, the top bestsellers consistently include woody-amber Radio Bombay, refreshingly green Debaser with notes of fig and coconut, as well as mysterious and resinous Mississippi Medicine.

A special place in the perfumery archive is occupied by personal stories. The fragrance Durga, presented at Pitti Fragranze, was created by David as an ode to his wife and her creative beginning. And My Indian Childhood transports to childhood memories filled with spices and warmth.

Contribution to the Industry and Modern Recognition

D.S. & Durga is rightfully considered one of the pioneering brands that raised the wave of interest in independent American niche perfumery. Their approach to creating fragrances as authorial stories has inspired many contemporary perfumers. The brand continues to surprise with innovations, such as the Fume Truck project – a mobile store that traveled through New York during the pandemic.

Today, D.S. & Durga perfumes are not just scents, but collectible objects and topics for lively discussions among fans. They are valued for their authenticity, conceptual depth, and consistently high quality, making this house one of the most respected and discussed brands in the world of niche perfumery.
