Quality control in perfumery: how fragrances are tested
We are used to thinking of perfume as pure art: the perfumer's inspiration, a beautiful story, a bot...
Andrey Oleinikov is not just a perfumer, but a true visionary in the world of fragrances, who founded the iconic Russian brand Myropol. His journey from a childhood fascination with chemistry to creating perfumes that win the hearts of connoisseurs is a story of passion, experimentation, and boundless creativity, making him one of the most interesting figures in contemporary perfumery.
Born in Pavlovskaya Sloboda near Moscow, Andrei immersed himself in the world of scents and substances from an early age. His mother, who was fascinated by chemistry, taught him how to grow crystals, and his great-grandfather, who ran a cement factory, gave him a portable chemical laboratory. One of his most vivid olfactory memories from childhood was the perfume his mother brought back from Paris — probably the legendary Soir de Paris by Bourjois. This encounter with an exquisite fragrance was the spark that ignited his love for the art of perfumery.
At the age of 12-13, Andrei began his first experiments in creating fragrances, distilling essential oils from wormwood, mint, and chamomile in his home laboratory. After receiving a medical education, he did not abandon his passion, but turned it into a profession. He began to specialize in raw materials that were rare in Russia—concretes of bird cherry and poplar buds, which immediately set him apart from other masters and laid the foundation for his unique style.
Access to unique substances from the archives of the All-Union Scientific Research Institute in the 1990s, including natural amber and musk, opened up new horizons. Fascinated by incense and Ayurveda, Oleynikov began to integrate the principles of ancient practices into his compositions. His signature style is narrative perfumes that embody nostalgic childhood memories, ethnic motifs, and profound philosophical concepts, making each of his creations an emotional journey.
In 2004, Oleynikov began his commercial activities by creating handmade perfumes, and in 2010, his creations were given a name: Myropol. The name refers to the Byzantine myropola, the creators of the sacred world, which perfectly reflects the author's almost sacred attitude towards his work. This brand became a platform for his most daring and experimental works.
The perfumer's creativity has given the world many iconic fragrances that connoisseurs adore for their complexity and emotionality. Among the must-try works are the oriental Myropol - Kufi, the modern and delicate Myropol - Rose Vinyle, the spicy and woody Myropol - Zourbagan, and the refreshing Myropol - Jacinthe. Equally popular are the elegant Myropol - Dandy Myropol, the playful Myropol - Joker, the mysterious Myropol - Moonstone, as well as Myropol - Jegloff, Myropol - Fougere No. 1, the meditative Myropol - DUG-PA, Myropol - Jardin d'Hiver, Myropol - Vintage, and the refined Myropol - Camée.
Andrey Oleinikov is a perfumer-philosopher whose works break stereotypes. He is not afraid to combine the incompatible, using rare ingredients and drawing on the depths of memory. His perfumes are often nostalgic journeys or vivid ethnic sketches, which have earned him not only love in Russia, but also recognition among the international community of thoughtful fragrance connoisseurs.
Today, Andrei Oleinikov continues to live and work in Moscow, developing the Myropol collections and creating exclusive custom fragrances. His brand remains a symbol of an independent, thoughtful, and uncompromising approach to perfumery, constantly inspiring new connoisseurs to discover the magic of true designer fragrances.
