Quality control in perfumery: how fragrances are tested

The name Marcel Rochas is forever inscribed in the history of not only haute couture but also the art of perfumery. He was a true visionary whose creative genius shone equally brightly in creating elegant silhouettes and complex aromatic compositions. Rochas understood that perfume was the final, magical touch to an image and approached its creation with the same attention to detail as he did the cut of a dress.
Born in 1902, Marcel Rochas founded his fashion house in Paris in 1925, quickly gaining recognition for his innovative approach and bold decisions. His talent lay in his ability to capture the spirit of the times. In the 1930s, he intuitively sensed women's growing desire for self-expression through scent. This led the Rochas house to begin producing perfumes that, like his couture, became sensations.
Although Rochas himself was not a 'nose' in the technical sense, he was a brilliant creative director, personally involved in developing concepts and selecting raw materials. He collaborated with the best perfumers of his time to realize his vision. One of his most iconic fragrances is Rochas Audace, launched in 1972. A bold and sensual creation, it perfectly reflected its name ('Audacity') and the spirit of the emancipated 70s, becoming a true bestseller.
Rochas's style in perfumery can be characterized as elegant complexity with an emotional undercurrent. He valued rich, often floral compositions that didn't just smell but told a story. His perfumes, such as Femme (1944) or Madame Rochas (1960), were created as portraits of an idealized yet vibrant woman—romantic, mysterious, and self-assured. Each bottle became a piece of design art, emphasizing the fragrance's status as a precious accessory.
Today, the Rochas brand continues to evolve the legacy of its founder, releasing modern interpretations of his classics and new fragrances. Within the perfume enthusiast community, his creations remain objects of admiration and discussion. Reviews of Rochas perfumes often highlight their timeless elegance and high quality, and Marcel Rochas himself is remembered as the man who elevated perfumery to the rank of high art, on par with fashion.
