Perfumery and time travel: retro fragrances and their history

Sonia Constant—a name synonymous with exquisite musk and sensual floral accords—is one of the most influential and sought-after perfumers of our time. As senior perfumer at the legendary house of Givaudan, she is behind iconic fragrances loved by millions. Her journey into the world of fragrances began in an unusual way: fascinated by creativity since childhood, she dreamed of becoming a designer or architect. However, fate had other plans, and in 1994, after learning about the famous ISIPCA school, Sonia resolutely began writing to all perfume companies in search of an opportunity.
Her persistence paid off: in 1998, Sonia was hired by Givaudan as a laboratory assistant, and a year later she became a student at ISIPCA. This was only the beginning of her extensive training. After university, her talent was honed by Jean Gischard himself at the Givaudan perfume school. The unique experience of teaching at the same school consolidated her knowledge, and by 2004 she had firmly established herself in the company, preparing to conquer the world of fragrances.
Sonia Konstan's style is a masterful command of texture and emotion. She works virtuosically with musky accords, transforming them from base notes into central themes full of warmth, purity, and seduction. Her compositions often balance on the edge of minimalism and sensuality, combining transparent floral accords with velvety woody or leathery notes. This unique signature, where power is hidden under a veil of sophistication, has made her work so recognizable and beloved.
Sonya's career is a story of successful collaborations with the biggest names in the industry. Her early work for brands such as Crazylibellule and the Poppies, Fragonard, Avon, and Oriflame quickly demonstrated her versatile talent. However, true fame came with her fragrances for Tom Ford: the mysterious Noir Pour Femme, the sunny Orchid Soleil, and the iconic Ombre Leather 16 became bestsellers.
But the perfumer's real calling card was her long-standing work with Narciso Rodriguez. She created the brand's famous musky universe: the sensational Pure Musc, the languid Fleur Musc For Her, the passionate Narciso Rouge, and its more concentrated version, Pure Musc Absolue. No less significant are her poetic works for the niche house Les Liquides Imaginaires — Dom Rosa champagne and the brutally gentle Fortis.
In 2017, together with her husband Olivier Galiardo, Sonia Constant took a bold step and founded her own niche brand, Ella K Parfums. Its philosophy is a hymn to travel and personal discovery. Each fragrance, whether it is the spice-filled Rose de Pushkar, is born from impressions of distant countries. This project reveals Sonia Constant not only as a brief executor, but also as a true artist-author whose creativity knows no bounds.
From collaborations with Lanvin, Kenzo, and Burberry to creating affordable luxury for Zara, Sonia Constant's portfolio is impressive in its range. Her story is an inspiring example of how passion, perseverance, and impeccable taste can turn a dream into reality, and her perfumes have become part of the personal history of fans around the world. Today, she doesn't just create fragrances, she sets trends and sets the tone for an entire era in perfumery.
