Thomas Fonten is one of the most respected contemporary French perfumers, whose name is inextricably linked with the revival of historical heritage. His unique specialization is the skillful reformulation of iconic compositions of the past, thanks to which he has become a modern "keeper of time" for legendary houses such as Jean Patou, Lubin, and Parfums Grès Paris. Working as Jean Patou's in-house perfumer, he carefully brings back to life the fragrances that once captivated hearts, adapting them to modern standards without sacrificing the soul of the original.
Thomas's destiny was sealed at the age of 11, when he first experienced the exquisite elegance of Pour Monsieur by Chanel. That moment was decisive. After receiving a brilliant education at the prestigious ISIPCA school and completing internships at BBA and IFF, he honed his skills at major companies, including Procter & Gamble and Mane. His first independent works in the late 1990s for Cafe Parfums and Henry M. Betrix laid the foundation for his career.
Fontaine's true talent lies in his ability to engage in dialogue with history. His style is characterized by a deep respect for the classic French school of perfumery, complemented by modern purity and relevance of accords. Working with archival formulas, he does not simply copy, but interprets, making vintage masterpieces understandable and desirable to a new audience. This balance between tradition and innovation is his signature style.
Fontaine's portfolio is a gallery of successful projects. He breathed new life into Lubin's treasures, creating modern versions of the sensual Figaro, the sparkling Gin Fizz, and the mysterious Black Jade. For Jean Patou, he recreated eternal joy in Joy Forever. His talent also created bestsellers for the mass market, such as the playful #Bon Bon Cherie and the mysterious Mrs. Incognito for Faberlic.
Fontaine's career is striking in its diversity. In addition to the giants already mentioned, he created fragrances for Molinard (Cuir), revived the house of Le Galion (the elegant Tulipe), worked with Comptoir Sud Pacifique on Rhum & Tabac, and even created the fresh Aqua Majestae for the niche brand Le Couvent des Minimes.
In 2009, Fontaine founded his own company, Pallida, which highlights his entrepreneurial spirit and desire for complete creative freedom. His contribution to perfumery cannot be overestimated: he not only creates new fragrances, but also acts as a fragrance archaeologist, saving entire layers of perfumery history from oblivion. His work for Jean Patou and Givenchy confirms his status as a master who is entrusted with the most valuable thing — heritage.
