The Path to Perfumery: From First Notes to Recognition

Iryna Pokolenko is a Ukrainian perfumer whose name has remained in the history of Soviet and post-Soviet perfumery thanks to her work with iconic factories. She began her journey at the Lviv Perfume and Cosmetic Factory, where she mastered the art of creating fragrances under the guidance of experienced craftsmen. It was there that she honed her intuition and ability to blend natural and synthetic notes to create memorable compositions for a wide range of consumers.

After receiving a classical education in chemistry and technology of perfume and cosmetic production, Iryna quickly demonstrated her talent for creating feminine and warm fragrances. She was not afraid to experiment with chords popular in the 1970s–80s and always aimed to make each bottle instantly recognizable. Her approach to work was consistently inspired by the nature and culture of her native region — which is why her fragrances often feature wildflowers, forest berries, and soft woody undertones.

Collaboration with Legendary Brands

The most prominent stage in Pokolenko's career was her work with Krasnaya Gvozdika — the Odessa perfume giant that produced famous colognes and perfumes. For this brand, she created one of her most acclaimed fragrances — "Synevyr," inspired by the namesake Carpathian lake. This woody-aquatic perfume quickly won women's hearts for its freshness and mystique. Iryna also collaborated fruitfully with Parfjumerno-Kosmeticheskaja Fabrika Lvov, where her talent flourished to its fullest — it was there that her most tender and lyrical compositions were born.

At the Lviv factory, Iryna Pokolenko worked on an entire line of fragrances that still evoke nostalgia among connoisseurs of Soviet perfumery. Her ability to balance on the edge of classic and modern allowed these perfumes to remain relevant even decades later. Today, collectors seek out vintage bottles featuring her work, while perfume forums continue to buzz with discussions about their unique character.

Iconic Fragrances That Captured Hearts

Among the many compositions she created, a special place belongs to Parfjumerno-Kosmeticheskaja Fabrika Lvov - Tsvetok Schastia. This is a light floral-powdery fragrance that imparts a feeling of carefree joy. Its top notes are ripe peach and bergamot, the heart — lily of the valley and rose, and the base consists of soft musk and sandalwood. Pokolenko managed to create a true antidepressant in a bottle, and many still recall it with warmth.

Another iconic work is Krasnaya Gvozdika - Vecherniy Lvov Odekolon — a tart, spicy-woody cologne with notes of juniper, frankincense, and oakmoss. It was designed for evening strolls and dates, emphasizing mystery and depth. And the fragrance Krasnaya Gvozdika - Lvov became an homage to the city that inspired the perfumer: it combines the freshness of Carpathian herbs, the warmth of Lviv coffee, and a velvety trail of tonka beans.

The Master's Signature and Contribution to the Industry

Iryna Pokolenko's style can be described as feminine yet with character. She worked masterfully with contrasts: soft floral chords coexist with spicy or woody notes, while the transparency of the top layers transitions into a rich base. The perfumer was not afraid to use ingredients relatively rare for the Soviet era, such as water hyacinth or orris root, which made her compositions stand out from competitors' products. Her contribution to popularizing the Ukrainian perfumery school is invaluable: it was thanks to masters like Pokolenko that local factories were able to compete with the Moscow and Leningrad giants.

Today, Iryna Pokolenko's fragrances are experiencing a rebirth.
