Scents of eras: how perfume reflects the spirit of the times
Every era has its own scent. Not literally, but in how it felt: what it wanted, what it feared, what...
Loc Dong is a name known to every fragrance connoisseur, the senior perfumer of the legendary company IFF, whose creative journey resembles a fairy tale. His story is an inspiring example of how a love of scents, inherited from his herbalist grandfather in Ho Chi Minh City, turned into an outstanding career that has given the world some of the best-selling and most talked-about perfumes of the last two decades.
While studying medicine in the United States, Loc Dong planned to become a doctor, but fate had other plans. A summer internship at a perfume laboratory turned his world upside down and revealed his true calling. He immersed himself in the art, interning at renowned centers in Grasse, Paris, and Germany to hone his unique "nose." In 2002, his talent led him to the New York division of IFF, where his rise to fame began.
It was at IFF that the iconic fragrances that defined Loc Dong's perfumery style were born. His breakthrough came with the sensual and mysterious Calvin Klein Euphoria (2005), which he co-created with industry masters. It was followed by the refreshing Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gioia, the passionate Yves Saint Laurent Manifesto, and the salty-vanilla icon Paco Rabanne Olympéa. Each of these hits not only became trends, but also set the standard for their categories.
Loc Dong's style is a masterful combination of sensual depth and crystal freshness. He masterfully works with accords of salty notes, juicy fruits, and warm amber or vanilla trails, creating fragrances that feel both modern and timeless. It is this signature style that has been appreciated by leading fashion houses, including Giorgio Armani, Yves Saint Laurent, Paco Rabanne, and Calvin Klein.
Loc Dong's talent is in demand not only in the luxury segment. He has created perfumes for celebrities such as Beyoncé (Rise), Taylor Swift (Wonderstruck Enchanted), and Mariah Carey. His ability to sense trends has also been evident in the successful development of entire fragrance families, as in the case of the numerous variations of Olympéa (Aqua, Legend), which consistently receive high praise from the perfume enthusiast community.
Loc Dong is one of those masters who shape the face of modern perfumery. His fragrances, balancing on the edge of art and commercial success, prove that perfume can be affordable, recognizable, and incredibly sophisticated at the same time. Today, continuing his work at IFF, he remains an influential figure whose creativity continues to inspire and set the tone for new generations of perfumers and fragrance lovers around the world.
