Oh Hani is a name that is firmly associated with the revival of Korean olfactory culture. This talented perfumer, whose career started in the early 2010s, managed to organically blend Western perfumery techniques with traditional Korean practices. His journey into the industry began with studying chemistry at Seoul National University and continued with an internship at the famous Givaudan perfumery school in France. It was there that he embraced the idea of creating fragrances that tell the stories of his ancestors in a modern language.

Collaboration with the Heroes of Korea Brand

Oh Hani's finest hour came when he began working on the Heroes of Korea project. For this ambitious niche brand, he created an entire collection of fragrances, each dedicated to legendary figures of the Land of the Morning Calm. The perfumer personally studied historical chronicles, paintings, and poetry from each era to convey the hero's character through notes. For example, while working on Heo Nanseolheon, he was inspired by the poetry collections of the 16th-century Korean poetess—hence the delicate floral nuances with a slightly bitter trail.

The master's portfolio is a whole gallery of images. The powerful royal Sejong The Great unfolds with woody-spicy chords, while the wise Shin Saimdang smells of iris powder and green tea. The physician Heo Jun is captured in a herbal cocktail with bitter wormwood, and the reformer Jeongjo the Great evokes amber and frankincense. Each bottle is like a page from a history textbook that you want to breathe in again and again.

The Perfumer's Signature Style

Oh Hani prefers to work with natural ingredients—especially those that have been used for centuries in Korean medicine and tea ceremonies. His signature note is hanbok (traditional persimmon) with its astringent-sweet scent. The master also often uses pine accents reminiscent of the pine forests of Mount Geumgang, and smoky labdanum that alludes to the aromas of Confucian altars. Critics note that his style is refined minimalism: even complex compositions sound pure and clear, like calligraphy on rice paper.

Fragrances That Conquered the World

Among the most talked-about works of the master is Kim Gu, dedicated to the independence activist. This fragrance with leather, tobacco, and plum became a real hit at international perfume exhibitions. And the energetic Kim Hongdo, inspired by the Joseon era painter, captivates with the contrast of fresh citrus and earthy vetiver. Users particularly praise the longevity and sillage of Oh Hani's fragrances—they live on the skin for 8–10 hours, gradually changing character.

Interestingly, the perfumer himself considers Heo Nanseolheon to be his best work. 'In this fragrance, I poured all my love for Korean poetry,' he admits in rare interviews. 'I wanted the person wearing it to feel like a hero of an ancient sijo.' And judging by the enthusiastic reviews from the community, he succeeded.

Contribution to Global Perfumery

Today, Oh Hani is one of the main ambassadors of Korean niche perfumery. He regularly speaks at ESXENCE and Pitti Fragranze conferences, proving that Asia can offer the world not only conceptual fragrances but also the highest quality of execution. Thanks to his work, thousands of people around the world are discovering the rich culture of Korea through scent. And it seems this is just the beginning.
