Shalimar: the history of the first amber fragrance

René Morgenthaler is a name that everyone who appreciates the history of fragrances should know. This Swiss master, originally from Geneva, went from being a curious chemistry student to one of the key perfumers and managers in the modern industry. His career began at the legendary Roure Bertrand Dupont school (now Givaudan), which he graduated from in 1972, gaining an invaluable foundation for future creative successes.
Morgenthaler devoted more than thirty years of his life to Givaudan, where he rose from creator of compositions to head of the development department. It was here that his talent as not only a "nose" but also a strategist was revealed. He managed the innovative Givaudan Access project, which gave him a deep understanding of the commercial aspects of perfumery. This unique combination of creativity and business acumen attracted leading fashion houses to him.
Morgenthaler created iconic fragrances for Calvin Klein, including the fresh and daring CK One, which became a symbol of a generation in the 1990s. His signature style is recognizable in the sensual Obsession and its lighter version, Obsession Sheer, as well as in the friendly and versatile CK be. In addition, he has created fragrances for Ralph Lauren (Extreme Polo Sport), niche brand Bond No. 9 (Hamptons), and Gale Hayman, for whom he created the seductive Delicious.
René Morgenthaler's work always strikes a balance between bold concepts and impeccably wearable compositions. He had a masterful sense of the spirit of the times: he created revolutionary unisex fragrances when they were still a novelty and knew how to reinterpret classics, making them relevant to a new audience. His style can be described as modern, clear, and emotionally charged. He proved that a successful fragrance can be both an artistic statement and a commercial hit.
After leaving Givaudan in 2003, Morgenthaler did not retire. Since 2008, he has been a co-founder and key figure at SmartFragrances. Here, he focused on developing exclusive compositions for private clients and consulting, passing on his vast experience to the next generation of fragrance creators. His journey embodies the evolution of the perfumer from a creator in the laboratory to a visionary shaping the future of the entire industry.
