Stefan Ulvund Eien is a Norwegian perfumer whose name may not yet be world-renowned, but has already been written into the history of modern niche perfumery. He represents the young generation of “noses” who boldly break the rules of the classic fragrance pyramid and create scents that read like personal diaries. His journey into the industry began with studying chemistry and perfumery at the Grasse Institute of Perfumery – that very mecca where legends like Jean-Claude Ellena honed their craft. But unlike many graduates, Stefan did not head into mass-market; instead, he chose the path of independent creativity, focusing on collaborations with small yet vibrant brands.
Stefan’s portfolio includes several iconic projects, but the most notable is his collaboration with Nude Beauty. This brand is known for its philosophy of bare beauty and minimalism, and Stefan managed to translate that into the language of olfaction. In addition to working with Nude Beauty, he has created compositions for the Swedish label Stora Skuggan and took part in limited series for the Norwegian house Geir Ness. Each of his fragrances is not just a commercial product, but an exploration of space, memory, and texture. Stefan is not afraid to use unexpected accords – sea salt, concrete, wet wool – and blend them with classic notes of iris, amber, and vetiver.
Stefan Ulvund Eien’s signature style is minimalism with character. His scents never shout, but always leave a trace. He works with atmospheric scenarios: coastal fog, cold metal, damp moss – and packages them into elegant, almost graphic pyramids. If you love perfumery that requires listening rather than immediate understanding, his work is for you. Stefan avoids heavy gourmand sweets and synthetic “hits”; his territory is transparency, air, light. In each of his fragrances, you sense Northern restrained nobility and respect for natural ingredients.
One of the perfumer’s most famous works is Nude Beauty - New York. This composition became an olfactory portrait of the city that never sleeps, yet seen through the lens of elegant restraint. The top notes feature crisp bergamot and pepper with a hint of asphalt after rain; the heart reveals violet and suede; the base settles on cedar and musk. The perfume received high praise from critics for its bold combination of urban grit and floral refinement. It was this fragrance that brought Stefan recognition within the professional community and opened doors for future projects.
Stefan Ulvund Eien is a perfumer who does not seek mass fame. He lives in Oslo, works in a small studio, and often uses ingredients hand-gathered from Scandinavian forests in his formulas. His approach is a challenge to the fast-fragrance industry: he may spend over a year on a single composition to achieve the perfect balance. Despite a modest number of releases, each of his fragrances becomes a collector’s item among niche enthusiasts. You can find a complete list of Stefan’s works and user reviews online, and we invite you to share your own impressions and discuss this talented author and his fragrances.
