Scents of eras: how perfume reflects the spirit of the times
Every era has its own scent. Not literally, but in how it felt: what it wanted, what it feared, what...
Immerse yourself in the history of one of the most poetic and tragic chapters of French perfumery — the house of Arys. Founded in 1916, this brand became a symbol of Art Deco, luxury, and artistic spirit for three decades, leaving behind not only magnificent fragrances but also bottles that are considered works of art today. Its history is inseparable from the personality of its founder — a Renaissance man whose life ended as an act of resistance.
In 1916, in the midst of World War I, the physician and entrepreneur Lucien Gros registered "Société Anonyme des Parfums d'Arys" in Paris. Production was set up in the industrial suburb of Courbevoie, and an elegant boutique opened on the prestigious Rue de la Paix. Already in the early 1920s, Arys confidently made its mark internationally, presenting its creations at exhibitions in Casablanca, New York, Vienna, and Havana. The highlight was participation in the famous 1925 International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris, which gave its name to the Art Deco style. The brand quickly gained popularity thanks to fashionable oriental and chypre accords that met the demands of the jazz age and emancipation.
The figure of the founder adds incredible depth to the history of Arys. Lucien Gros was not just a businessman: a practicing urologist, co-author of a medical preparation, bibliophile, owner of a unique collection of historical documents (including the will of Louis XIV), science fiction writer, and Knight of the Legion of Honor. This multifaceted nature was reflected in the approach to perfumery — as a synthesis of art, science, and emotion. In 1940, Gros joined the French Resistance. In June 1944, he was arrested by the Gestapo and deported to the Dachau concentration camp, where he was executed in October. His tragic death predetermined the fate of the entire house.
Arys perfumes are the embodiment of the luxury and exoticism of the 1920s and 1930s. The brand skillfully worked with rich oriental and amber compositions, delicate floral bouquets, and complex chypres. Among the early hits were Chypre, which gave its name to an entire family, and the flirtatious L'Amour dans le Cœur. The elegant Dame au Saphir — a jewel-like fragrance — was particularly loved by the public. An unusual collaboration was the launch of the fragrance Yank commissioned by the American toy company Lionel, known for its model railroads.
The brand also explored lighter, airier accords, as in the composition Le Bonheur dans L'Air (“Happiness in the Air”). Each fragrance was not just a liquid in a bottle, but a complete artistic statement, where everything mattered — from the selection of notes to the packaging design.
The true hallmark of Arys was its collaboration with the great René Lalique. Beginning in the 1920s, the master of glass and jewelry created true sculptural masterpieces for the house. The bottles for Dame au Saphir, L'Amour dans le Cœur, or Ambré Vermeil, with their geometric lines, reliefs, and play of light, are coveted lots at Art Deco art auctions today. For other creations, such as L'Heure Heureuse or Promenade Matinale, Arys chose the crystal of the legendary house Baccarat. This attention to detail elevated perfumery to the level of high fashion and collecting.
In 1945, after the liberation of France, the house of Arys released its farewell and most poignant fragrance — Témoignage (“Testimony”). It was dedicated to the memory of Lucien Gros and became a quiet but powerful monument to his courage. Soon after, the company ceased to exist, leaving a bright but short mark on history.
Today, Arys is a myth, the object of pursuit for collectors of vintage perfumery and connoisseurs of Art Deco art. Its perfumes, especially in the original Lalique bottles, are true rarities. Studying Arys is a journey into the golden era of perfumery, where behind each fragrance stood not just a commercial idea, but a personal story, artistic audacity, and unwavering human bravery.
