Shalimar: the history of the first amber fragrance

American perfume house S-Perfume is more than just a brand. It embodies a creative experiment born at the intersection of sculpture, surf culture, and the art of scent. Its history began in 2000 in New York, when artist and sculptor Nobi Shioya, longing for California waves in chilly Brooklyn, launched a performance called Olfactory Art. The essence of the project was applying unique scents to his sculptural objects, creating a total sensory experience. It was from this artistic gesture that the future niche brand grew.
The name S-Perfume and its parent company Shaping Room directly reference the world of surfing, where Nobi began his journey. "Shaping room" translates to a workshop for shaping (molding) surfboards. This philosophy of manual labor, connection with natural elements, and pursuit of perfect form became the foundation of the brand's DNA. S-Perfume positioned itself from the start as an idea laboratory, where scent is as expressive a material as clay or paint.
Nobi Shioya is a chameleon-like figure in the perfume world. Trained as a sculptor, he brought a non-standard, artistic perspective to the industry. His approach to creating scents is compared to that of a conceptual artist: each bottle is a complete work, and each composition is a story told through smell. Interestingly, for the debut scents of his performance, he invited none other than the legendary Alberto Morillas, immediately setting a high standard of quality.
Few know that in 2002, the brand released an entire line called "Seven Deadly Sins," which, however, quickly disappeared from the market, becoming a collector's hunt. Another curious fact: after the success of early releases, Shioya temporarily stepped away from the project to focus on his new, even more experimental brand A Lab on Fire. But fan love compelled him to bring back S-Perfume in 2014 with updated, ultra-minimalist bottle designs.
S-Perfume's signature is difficult to fit into one narrow definition. It is a provocative brand that boldly plays with contrasts and emotions. Its portfolio includes meditative, transparent aquatics reminiscent of the ocean, as well as dense, almost tactile compositions with chocolate, leather, and blood (figuratively, of course). What unites them is overall artistic integrity and deep exploration of the idea.
The brand is known for involving star perfumers, giving them creative freedom. Besides Morillas, scents were crafted by masters such as the sensual Sophia Grojsman, the virtuoso of floral chords Carlos Benaim, the inventive Pascal Gaurin, and the avant-garde Christophe Laudamiel. This synthesis of the founder's artistic vision and the technical mastery of "noses" has produced truly unique creations.
The brand's catalog is small, but each item is iconic. Start your journey with the debut that started it all: V1.05 Jet Scent and its modern version Jet Scent Remix 2.0. This is not just a "marine" scent, but a complex portrait of a surfboard: here you can hear wax, rubber, salty breeze, and even hot asphalt after riding.
The signature and most-discussed creation is the scent 100% Love by Sophia Grojsman. Its provocative duo of bitter chocolate and red roses with a metallic glimmer (associated by many with blood) evokes polar emotions but leaves no one indifferent. No less famous is the sensual Se-x by Christophe Laudamiel – warm, leathery, with notes of absinthe and vanilla, which has become cult for many niche perfume enthusiasts.
Among other must-try scents are the mysterious and resinous 1499, dedicated to the era of Great Geographical Discoveries; the ultra-pure and meditative musk Musk S; and the exquisite woody compositions Kamakura and Himiko, inspired by Japanese aesthetics.
The revival of S-Perfume in 2014 was met with ovations from devoted fans. The brand not only reissued its hits but presented them in a completely new, minimalist guise. Angular, almost laboratory-like bottles gave way to smooth cylinders of thick glass with concise metal caps. This rebranding emphasized the maturity and elegant simplicity of the brand's DNA.
To the already legendary 100% Love and S-Ex were added four new perfumery novels: 1499, Kamakura, Himiko, and Musk S, each continuing the exploration of complex themes through the lens of scent. However, since then, the brand has not released new scents, and its founder has focused creative efforts on the project A Lab on Fire. This makes the current S-Perfume collection a complete and coherent artistic statement, retaining its status as cult and collectible.
Like many niche brands with limited runs, S-Perfume can attract attention from unscrupulous copyists. To ensure the authenticity of a scent, pay attention to several key details. First, buy perfumes only from official dealers or reputable niche retailers—due to the brand's limited distribution, the risk of encountering fakes in random places is high.
Original bottles released after 2014 feature impeccable quality: heavy, smooth glass without bubbles or streaks, clear laser engraving of the name on the bottom, and a tightly fitted metal cap with a matte coating. Packaging is a simple cardboard box without frills. Any grammatical errors in the name on the box or bottle, a loose cap, or a sharp, unpleasant chemical smell instead of a complex perfumery composition are clear signs of a counterfeit.
