Fragrances aged like wine: slow perfumery and Amouage Sequence

Today, Fredrik Dahlman is one of the most recognizable voices in the world of niche perfumery. His path to the pinnacle of the art of fragrance began far from the laboratories of Grasse, with degrees in journalism and social sciences, followed by culinary training and work as a sommelier in Sweden. It was this unexpected background, where taste and smell became professional tools, that awakened his passion for perfume. This passion led him to the Grasse Institute of Perfume in 2013, where his official transformation into a "nose" began.
Starting as a consultant at the Ormonde Jayne boutique and an account manager at L'Artisan Parfumeur, Dalman quickly immersed himself in the industry. He honed his creative and technical skills at Accords et Parfums, working his way up from lab assistant to junior perfumer. However, his real creative breakthrough was yet to come, and fate brought him into contact with a legacy that he not only continued, but reimagined.
In 2016, Fredrik Dahlman became the in-house perfumer, creative director, and heart of the Mona di Orio house. He took on the bold mission of preserving the spirit of the founder while leading the brand into the future. Dalman systematized the archive, creating the distinct Les Nombres d'Or and Monogram collections, and began a new chapter. His early works for the brand, such as Bohea Boheme and Dojima, showed a deep respect for the material and a subtle sense of balance.
Dalman's style can be described as intellectual sensuality. He masterfully works with contrasts, often juxtaposing light and dark, transparent and dense. His culinary background is evident in bold, almost edible accords, such as in the spicy Café Simien or the honeyed Mellifera. At the same time, his fragrances are never literal — they are complex, multi-layered stories where the rich tobacco base of Tabaceau or the velvety leather of Suède de Suède take on an unexpected airiness and modern sound.
Dalman's work for Mona di Orio has given the world many iconic fragrances that are hotly debated in the perfume community. The year 2019 was a landmark year with the launch of the large-scale Alinea collection, which included eight new creations: from the mysterious Four Thieves to the crystal-clear Sainte Blanche. His works with rare materials are particularly loved — for example, the luxurious Santal Nabataea, which presents sandalwood in a new light, or the bright Vermilion Wood. His talent for reinterpreting the classics shines through in Semper Augustus, a modern ode to the ancient tulip, and in Domaine, where he creates a surprisingly realistic portrait of a grapevine.
Fredrik Dahlmann does not limit himself to creating perfumes in the traditional sense. Since 2016, he has also been the perfumer for the Zenology brand, creating exquisite fragrances for premium hotel spaces, which speaks to his versatility. His influence on modern perfumery lies in his ability to make a niche fragrance deep yet accessible, artistic yet emotional. Each of his new creations, whether it be the abstract floral Rose Concrete or another experiment, becomes an event, confirming Dalman's status as one of the most interesting and progressive perfumers of our time.
