Quality control in perfumery: how fragrances are tested

Gosha Rubchinskiy is a cult figure in contemporary Russian fashion, a designer, photographer, and founder of his eponymous brand, who managed to transform the aesthetic of 90s urban outskirts into a global phenomenon. Although his main domain is streetwear, in 2016 he made a striking foray into the world of perfumery, creating a single, yet iconic fragrance in collaboration with the legendary house Comme des Garçons Parfums.
Born in Moscow in 1984, Rubchinskiy's journey took him from a stylist and makeup artist for cinema to the founder of his own fashion brand in 2008. His debut collection, "Evil Empire," shown at Sokolnik Stadium with non-professional skateboarder models, shattered conventions of fashion shows. But the real breakthrough came after the "Growing and Developing" show in 2010, which caught the attention of Rei Kawakubo and secured the patronage of Comme des Garçons. This opened the doors to global runways for the designer and led to collaborations with adidas and Burberry.
The embodiment of Rubchinskiy's philosophy is his debut perfume — Comme des Garçons Parfums - Gosha Rubchinskiy. Working with the talented 'nose' Alexis Dadier, the designer aimed to capture not the scent of luxury, but the atmosphere of youth, freedom, and concrete urban spaces. Inspiration came from summer holidays, scorching asphalt, skateboards, and that particular feeling of "young people hanging out and skating together."
Gosha Rubchinskiy's fragrance is a bold, almost architectural composition. It opens with a sharp, smoky note of birch tar and juicy mandarin, evoking the image of urban heat. The heart unfolds with an unusual floral chord of angelica and chamomile, while the base of styrax, vetiver, and patchouli leaves a persistent, slightly dirty, yet infinitely alluring trail, reminiscent of the scent of leather, concrete, and a long summer day.
Although in 2018 the designer announced a pause in seasonal collections for his main brand, his influence remains colossal. He popularized Cyrillic lettering on clothing and became one of the most influential Russian designers in the world according to Business of Fashion. Today, Rubchinskiy focuses on developing other projects, including the 'Rassvet' brand and the GR-Uniforma label, but his perfumery debut forever remains in history as a unique case where a fragrance told a story not of flowers, but of the spirit of a time and a generation.
