Pheromone perfume: can fragrances increase attractiveness?

The Comme des Garçons perfume line is not just an addition to the legendary fashion house, but an independent and influential force in the world of niche perfumery. Born from the radical vision of Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo, it has been challenging traditional notions of what a fragrance should be since 1994. If Comme des Garçons fashion deconstructs silhouettes, its perfumes deconstruct olfactory expectations, offering to wear not flowers and fruits, but concepts, emotions, and memories of urban landscapes.
The Comme des Garçons fashion house was founded by Rei Kawakubo in Tokyo in 1969, and its perfume branch came into being 25 years later, in 1994. The key figure in this endeavor was Christian Astuguevieille, a talented artist and former perfumer at Rochas, whom Kawakubo invited to become the creative director. Their union gave birth to a philosophy where perfume is a tool for stimulating the senses and asking questions, not just an accessory. The very first fragrance, created by Mark Buxton, was poured into a "pebble" bottle designed by Kawakubo herself, immediately signifying a departure from the usual luxury aesthetic.
Since its founding, the brand has consistently followed a course of intellectual provocation. The cult "anti-perfume" Odeur 53 (1998) consisted of abstract notes like "fresh air," "fluorescent light," and "photocopy paper," shocking and inspiring the entire industry. This boldness made Comme des Garçons Parfums a cult phenomenon for connoisseurs seeking not just a scent, but a unique sensory experience.
The brand's DNA is avant-garde, genderless, and abstract. Here, you won't find standard "feminine" or "masculine" compositions. Instead, Comme des Garçons offers scent-experiences: cold concrete, incense smoke, freshly cut grass greenery, or metallic shine. This approach fully reflects the aesthetic of the parent fashion house, which has always fought against objectification of the body through cut. Perfumery becomes an extension of this idea, liberating the sense of smell from gender and commercial clichés.
Christian Astuguevieille compares creating perfumes to working in fashion, where collections must be quickly updated to remain relevant. This is why the brand's portfolio already includes over a hundred fragrances, grouped into bold thematic series, and each new launch is an anticipated event in the world of niche perfumery.
To embody its complex concepts, Comme des Garçons collaborates with the most talented and progressive "noses" in the world. This luxurious laboratory has attracted visionaries such as Bertrand Duchaufour, author of the meditative incense in "Avignon", and Quentin Bisch, who created the unusual "Concrete".
Masters such as Maurice Roucel and Aurélien Guichard have also contributed to shaping the brand's unique signature. Thanks to this union of bold ideas and highest executive mastery, Comme des Garçons fragrances, such as the woody-spicy bestseller "Wonderwood" or the eccentric "Comme des Garçons 2", remain objects of desire and heated discussions among fans for many years.
The brand is famous not only for its scents but also for its total attention to detail. The graphic design of the entire perfume collection, including the iconic black-and-white labels, is developed by artist Marc Atlan. Comme des Garçons Parfums also actively participates in collaborations, such as with the magazine Monocle, releasing capsule collections that become the subject of hunting for collectors.
Since 2002, the production and distribution of fragrances have been partially supported by the Spanish group Puig, which has helped in the global spread of these niche masterpieces. Remaining true to its avant-garde spirit, the brand continues to shape the future of perfumery, proving that the most memorable fragrances are born at the intersection of art, provocation, and impeccable craftsmanship.
