The story of an independent nose

Josh Meyer is one of the most vibrant and original contemporary perfumers, whose journey into the world of fragrances began not in the laboratories of Grasse, but on the west coast of the United States. Born in sunny Hermosa Beach, California, and spending his childhood in Colorado, he went through a period of musical enthusiasm and a career in real estate before perfumery caught up with him. The fateful moment came when he ordered razors with samples of niche perfumes attached, which sparked an insatiable interest in him. It was not just a curious twist of fate, but the beginning of a philosophy where fragrance became a language for storytelling.

The birth of imaginary stories

Leaving his previous job, Josh immersed himself in the study of perfumery, experimenting with fragrant substances at home. In 2012, his self-education culminated in the creation of the cult niche brand Imaginary Authors. His ingenious concept—to present each fragrance as a book by a fictional writer—instantly won the hearts of connoisseurs. The first collection, released in a limited edition, established him as a bold innovator, unafraid of animalistic notes, as in Bull's Blood, or daring floral accords in the spirit of L'Orchidee Terrible.

Style and iconic fragrances

Josh Meyer's signature style is his ability to transform complex, sometimes contradictory themes into incredibly wearable and emotional compositions. He is a master of hyper-realistic accords: from smoldering coals and burning rubber in the scandalous A City On Fire to juicy strawberries in a pine forest in the delicate Cape Heartache. His best fragrances have become the benchmark for modern niche perfumery, balancing artistry and accessibility. Fan favorites consistently include the gourmet A Whiff of Waffle Cone, the dreamy Yesterday Haze, and the refreshing Saint Julep.

Collaborations and recognition

The success of Imaginary Authors opened the door for Josh to collaborate with other influential players in the industry. His talent was in demand for a wide variety of projects, from creating the exclusive fragrance L.A. She Called But He Was Unreachable for fashion giant Anthropologie to developing an entire line for The Sum. He also created the iconic pine-scented Winter Green for the Dasein brand and participated in projects for The Institute for Art and Olfaction, confirming his reputation not only as a perfumer but also as an artist.

Legacy and influence

Today, working from his studio in Portland, Josh Meyer continues to expand the universe of imaginary authors, regularly releasing new "chapters" in the form of fragrances. His contribution to perfumery is the democratization of the niche, proof that deep conceptuality can go hand in hand with charming, wearable aesthetics. Reissues of hits, such as the updated The Soft Lawn 2021, only fuel the community's interest. Josh Meyer is a living legend of independent perfumery, whose stories in fragrance continue to inspire and resonate with thousands of fans around the world.
