Scent as part of identity: finding your perfume signature

Kilian Hennessy is not just a perfumer, but a true visionary and founder of the iconic brand of the same name, who has redefined luxury in perfumery. Born in 1972 into a family at the origins of the cognac empire, he decided at a young age to follow his own path, striving to create a legacy under his own name rather than his famous surname.
His education at the CELSA communications school and internship at Kenzo Parfums laid the foundation for his understanding of the magic of fragrances. However, his real immersion into the world of scents came when he studied under masters such as Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud and Thierry Wasser, who revealed to him the secrets of raw materials and composition. This invaluable experience became a springboard for work in the perfume departments of leading brands such as Dior, Paco Rabanne, Alexander McQueen, and Giorgio Armani. In 2007, having gained experience and courage, he founded his own brand, By Kilian, declaring the return of perfumery to the status of high art.
Hennessy acts more as a creative conductor and art director, entrusting the embodiment of his ideas to top perfumers such as Calice Becker. His style is bold sensuality, intellectual provocation, and uncompromising luxury. His signature style is built on contrasts: innocence and vice, lightness and depth, as in the iconic Good Girl Gone Bad. He has a particular love for white flowers, especially tuberose, which has become his olfactory signature.
The perfumes created under his guidance instantly become objects of desire and discussion in the perfume community. The top fragrances invariably include the seductive Love, Don't Be Shy with its marshmallow and orange blossom, and the deep, tobacco-honey Back to Black. Other masterpieces are also incredibly popular: the playful Forbidden Games, the languid Intoxicated with coffee and cardamom, and the luxurious tuberose in Beyond Love. Each bottle is a story told in the language of fragrance.
Kilian draws inspiration from his personal memories: the smell of tobacco and his grandfather's Dior - Eau Sauvage, as well as the white floral perfumes of the women in his family. Even his wedding gift to his wife was a personalized fragrance. The brand's success was so resounding that in 2016, Estée Lauder acquired it, leaving Hennessy as creative director. This move only confirmed Kilian's status as one of the most influential and innovative players in the world of niche perfumery, whose creations continue to win the hearts of true connoisseurs.
