Raymond Mats is a name that sounds like the symbol of the American perfume dream. This independent perfumer and founder of the company of the same name began his journey by studying economics, but his passion for fragrances led him to the Fashion Institute of Technology. While still a student, the talented young man was spotted by the legendary perfume house Firmenich, where he spent six years honing his sense of smell as an evaluator, laying the foundation for his future illustrious career.
In 1991, Mats took a bold step by joining Elizabeth Arden, where he quickly rose to the position of marketing director. But his real breakthrough came at Estée Lauder, which he joined in 1996. Here, as vice president of the global fragrance department, Raymond became the architect of fragrances for a whole host of iconic brands. It is to his creative vision that we owe such hits as the refreshing Aramis - Life and its summer variation Life My Summer, the playful Tommy Hilfiger - True Star, and the elegant Clinique - Simply.
In 2008, having gained invaluable experience, Raymond Mattes founded his own company to focus on custom fragrance development. His expertise was in demand in a wide variety of market segments. He created exquisite fragrances for the Ben Bridge jewelry house (Flawless), filled Brioni's clothing for successful men with the charismatic Brioni Eau de Toilette, and composed fresh and dynamic compositions such as Izod For Men and Izod for everyday fashion brands such as Van Heusen. His talent for transforming a brand's DNA into a fragrance was also evident in the lush tropical accords for Tommy Bahama (South Seas Woman and South Seas Man).
In 2014, the world finally saw the master's personal creations—his debut line of perfumes under his own name, Raymond Matts. The collection of seven fragrances became a calling card for his multifaceted style. It included the floral-woody tenderness of Sunah, the mysterious oriental trail of Tsiling, the bright citrus burst of Kaiwe, the green freshness of Maiaday, and the exquisite Jarro. These works instantly won the hearts of connoisseurs, proving that an independent perfumer can create compositions that are on par with those of giant brands.
Raymond Mattes never rests on his laurels. In 2016, he surprised the industry by partnering with Invisible Media, a company working at the intersection of fragrances and virtual reality digital technologies. His later creations continue to set the bar high: for example, the exquisite Mikimoto, created in collaboration with Frank Folkel for the iconic jewelry house Mikimoto, or the bold and modern Signature by Sam Edelman for the fashionable footwear and accessories brand.
Raymond Mats' style is a rare blend of commercial acumen and artistic boldness. He masterfully balances accessible harmony and niche complexity, creating fragrances that speak the language of their audience. From woody-amber accords for Brioni to juicy tropical notes for Tommy Bahama, his perfume palette is incredibly diverse. Today, looking back on his journey from evaluator to founder of his own house, we can safely say that Raymond Mats is a living legend whose creations continue to inspire and define the face of modern perfumery.
