Korean Perfumery: How K-Beauty Came to Fragrances
At first, the world fell in love with Korean creams and sheet masks. Then it was the turn of scent, ...
Renaud Salmon is a figure who has revolutionized the concept of contemporary niche perfumery. Today, he is known as the creative director of the legendary Omani house Amouage, but his path to this status was unconventional and inspiring. Born in Belgium, he initially studied economics, graduating from the prestigious HEC Liège business school. His career began in the world of high fashion, where he honed his understanding of luxury while working with Belgian accessories brand Delvaux and the legendary Louis Vuitton.
This experience in the luxury sector became an invaluable foundation. Moving to Procter & Gamble and then heading up global divisions at Dolce & Gabbana and Alexander McQueen, Salmon formed a unique perspective on branding and consumer emotions. His appointment in 2019 as creative director of Amouage was a landmark event, opening a new chapter for the brand.
Upon taking the helm, Salmon did not follow the beaten path. His debut collection, Renaissance, loudly announced a new direction. It included fragrances that instantly won the hearts of connoisseurs: the refreshingly minty Enclave, the sensual and berry Crimson Rocks, the airy and marine Ashore, and the cozy and spicy Meander. These perfumes demonstrated how to preserve Eastern luxury at home, enriching it with modern relevance and unexpected accents.
Under Salmon's leadership, Amouage became bolder and more dynamic. It was he who introduced the world to the brand's first ever flanker, the bold and deep Interlude Black Iris Man, and reimagined classics in exquisite extracts such as Interlude Man 53 and Reflection 45. His signature style is recognizable in the balance of power and elegance, whether it's the epic Epic 56 or the refined Honour 43.
The fragrances of The Library collection, where perfumery meets literature, occupy a special place in his legacy. The luxurious Silver Oud and its extract Opus XIII Silver Oud, dedicated to Stendhal's hero, as well as the brutal Opus VII Reckless Leather, are examples of how Salmon transforms complex concepts into exciting olfactory stories.
Reno Salmon is not just a manager, but a visionary who has managed to harmoniously combine the commercial acumen of a businessman with the subtle intuition of a creator. His work for Amouage has proven that a niche house can remain true to its roots while boldly looking to the future and attracting a new audience. The fragrances created under his leadership regularly top the ratings and become the subject of heated discussion in the perfume community, confirming his status as one of the most influential creative directors of our time.
