How to choose a perfume as a gift and not get it wrong
Perfumes seem like the perfect gift until you're standing in front of a display with a hundred bottl...
Richard Freyss is a name that embodies continuity and passion in the world of fragrances. Born into a family where the art of perfumery was passed down from generation to generation, he was destined for a great future. His father was the legendary André Fraisse, creator of the timeless Lanvin - Arpège, and his grandfather is believed to have created the benchmark Yardley - English Lavender. Richard's childhood was steeped in scents: with his eyes closed, he learned to distinguish between the nuances of jasmine from Grasse and Italy. Although the young Freyss dreamed of a career as a chef, his family heritage prevailed, and he devoted himself to studying the art of perfumery.
In the 1990s, fate brought Richard Freiss to Caron, where he took up the position of in-house perfumer. It was a difficult time for the master of French perfumery, which was experiencing a period of decline. Freiss became the "nose" that breathed new life into the brand. His early works — Lady Caron, Pour Une Femme de Caron, and Eaux de Caron Forte — did not just come out, they announced the brand's return to its roots with a modern interpretation. It is largely thanks to him that Caron has retained its unique place in the perfume Olympus.
Over the years, Richard Freiss has given the world many fragrances that have become bestsellers and objects of adoration for connoisseurs. Among his iconic works are the sensual and mysterious Tubereuse, the refreshingly spicy Eau de Reglisse (Liquorice), and the elegant Miss Rocaille. He brilliantly continued the brand's men's line with the bold Impact Pour Un Homme, which became the basis for a modern reinterpretation of the classics. A special place in his portfolio is occupied by deep and complex compositions such as Parfum Sacre Eau de Parfum Intense and Accord 119, demonstrating his virtuoso mastery of rich, oriental notes.
Richard Freiss' talent was in demand not only within Caron. His expertise and keen sense of style attracted other well-known houses. For the Spanish jewelry brand Tous, he created the playful and modern fragrance Metallic. In collaboration with Italian ballerina and fashion house Carla Fracci, he created the dramatic and passionate composition Medea, reflecting the power of the character from the opera of the same name. This diverse experience speaks to his ability to adapt his signature style to the philosophy of any brand, from niche to mass market.
Richard Freiss's style is characterized by a respect for the classics, multiplied by the boldness of modern interpretations. He masterfully works with luxurious floral accords, spices, and amber bases to create multifaceted, emotional stories. His particular achievement is his painstaking work on restoring and relaunching Caron's historic formulas. Under his leadership, masterpieces such as Narcisse Noir 2018, Montaigne 2018, and Pour un Homme Millesime 2014 have been carefully updated and presented to a new generation. He has proven that true classics never grow old, but only gain new dimensions.
In 2016, Richard Freiss made a symbolic gesture by handing over the position of chief perfumer at Caron to his son William, thus continuing the family tradition. His final large-scale project was the exquisite "La Collection Privée" 2018, which included the most valuable gems from the house's archives. Today, Richard Freiss's fragrances continue to rank highly and receive rave reviews from the perfumery community, which is the best proof of his timeless talent. He didn't just create perfumes — he preserved history and made new generations fall in love with it.
