Tomoo Inaba is one of the most prominent contemporary voices in the world of niche perfumery, a master whose journey from journalist and distributor to creator of iconic fragrances is truly inspiring. This Japanese perfumer has managed to combine a deep respect for natural materials with a modern artistic vision, creating fragrances that don't just smell good, but tell stories.

The path from aromatic curiosity to the art of perfumery

Tomoo Inabe's love of perfumery was passed on to him by his mother, who was passionate about botany, laying the foundation for his unique, almost scientific approach to fragrances. His career began far from the laboratory: event management, organizing exhibitions, and even setting up a distribution company in Tokyo. Wanting to understand the product he was working with more deeply, Inaba began to study fragrant materials on his own. This hobby grew into a passion: he began writing perfume reviews, and his thirst for knowledge led him to plantations and distilleries in Madagascar, India, and Tunisia, where he learned the secrets of natural raw materials firsthand.

The best and most famous fragrances by Tomoo Inaba

His debut, which instantly brought him recognition, was the fragrance Zoologist Perfumes - Nightingale (2016). Created for the Canadian niche house Zoologist Perfumes under the direction of Victor Wong, this perfume is a modern ode to Japanese aesthetics. Inaba masterfully combined the delicate accords of rose and violet with bitter greenery and a woody-amber base, creating a refined and melancholic floral-chypre symphony.

His second work for Zoologist, Zoologist Perfumes - Moth (2018), revealed another facet of the perfumer's talent - bold and gothic. It is a deep, almost tangible oriental masterpiece, where the smoke of incense and wax from ancient churches intertwines with honey, spices, and powdery notes, painting the image of a mysterious nocturnal creature.

In collaboration with the Beau Kwon brand, the bold leather composition Beau Kwon - Tuberai (2019) was born. Inaba explored contrast: he juxtaposed cold, earthy iris powder with the warmth of soft leather and smoky labdanum, resulting in an intellectual and unexpectedly wearable fragrance that was highly praised by connoisseurs of niche perfumery.

Signature style and contribution to the perfume community

Tomo Inaba's style is storytelling. Each of his fragrances is a journey filled with emotions and cultural references. He masterfully works with contrasts, balancing light and shadow, floral tenderness and resinous depth. His signature style is recognizable thanks to his attention to textures and complex, evolving accords.

But Inaba is not only a creator, but also an educator. He actively shares his knowledge by conducting master classes and seminars, where he immerses participants in the history of perfumery, introduces them to the classics, and teaches the basics of creating their own compositions. This educational missionary spirit makes him a unique figure who not only expands the perfume palette but also cultivates a new generation of thoughtful fragrance connoisseurs.
