Aedes de Venustas Café Tabac — the character and story of the fragrance

Café Tabac Eau de Parfum by Aedes de Venustas is a distinctive unisex fragrance released in 2023.

This eau de parfum has a rich, layered character in which tobacco depth meets juicy fruit, spices and dessert-like softness.

The name Café Tabac immediately sets the mood: a cosy café, dark wood, a cup of strong coffee and a smoky trail lingering in the air.

At the same time, the composition is far more than a straightforward tobacco accord — it unfolds with greater richness, combining oriental, woody, fruity and gourmand nuances.

Positioning and olfactory character

The fragrance is presented as unisex, so its character is not defined by gender stereotypes: Café Tabac can be equally striking on a woman or a man.

It is a choice for those who enjoy noticeable, distinctive compositions with warm spiciness and a tangible texture.

Café Tabac has very strong sillage: the fragrance can linger for a long time and create a dense scented cloud around the wearer.

The available information does not specify the recommended amount for skin and clothing, so it is best to start with a small number of sprays and gradually find a comfortable intensity.

In terms of mood, this is an especially expressive fragrance for cool weather, evening outings and occasions when you want to accentuate your look rather than disappear into it.

It will appeal to fans of long-lasting oriental-woody compositions, tobacco notes and gourmand nuances without excessive frivolity.

The creators and the brand’s style

Café Tabac was created by Bertrand Duchaufour, Karl Bradl and Robert Gerstner.

This combination of creators highlights the release’s dual nature: it combines the mastery of a complex niche composition with the founders’ personal vision of the fragrance house.

The story of Aedes de Venustas began with the legendary New York boutique that Karl Bradl and Robert Gerstner opened in 1995.

Café Tabac continues this aesthetic of selective perfumery: it is meant to be explored thoughtfully, values expressive materials and leaves room for personal interpretation.

Who should try Café Tabac

This fragrance is worth testing if you are looking not for universal “cleanliness”, but for a full-bodied, warm and memorable scent.

Its defining feature is the contrast between juicy fruit, spices, sweet accords, woody nuances and a dark tobacco-balsamic atmosphere.

As a similar direction, you might consider Ermenegildo Zegna Madras Cardamon Eau de Parfum, though Café Tabac retains its own recognisable signature thanks to its denser gourmand and tobacco facets.

Before buying, it is best to apply it to the skin and give the composition time to unfold: it is in the base that its richest, most diffusive character becomes apparent.

Café Tabac Note Pyramid

The database does not distinguish separate top, middle, and base notes for Café Tabac, so the composition is more accurately viewed as a unified accord rather than an artificial division into stages.

The overall profile features amber, tobacco, beeswax, bergamot, apple, caramel, cardamom, cedar, cocoa, vanilla, and tonka bean.

The fruity facet is supported by dates, davana, fig, mango, and tamarind, while the spicy-woody facet is shaped by clary sage, clove, juniper, oakmoss, and tar.

Labdanum and Peruvian balsam add resinous depth, bringing sweet, green, balsamic, and woody nuances together in a dense oriental gourmand composition.

Persistence
The persistence of a fragrance is determined by how long it can be felt. It is a characteristic associated with ingredients that evaporate slowly. Persistence depends on the physical properties of the perfume ingredients—mainly their volatility and environmental factors such as temperature and humidity.

Sillage
Imagine a light cloud of fragrance that, like an aeroplane trail, remains in the air after your appearance. This is the sillage - a subtle or vivid imprint left by the most diffuse element of a perfume composition. The sillage can be almost invisible when it is felt only by you and those around you. Or it can be so expressive that its presence is noticed even long after you have left.

Complexity and depth
The complexity of a fragrance is the number and variety of notes that create a unique composition. A complex fragrance contains many different notes that reveal themselves on the skin. The depth of a fragrance is the richness and intensity of the fragrance. Fragrances with a deep composition include heavy and powerful notes that stay on the skin longer and affect others over long distances.

This is definitely a masculine fragrance, no unisex at all! Because of the tar, it won't suit everyone, the note is very specific. But it has a right to exist. For some reason I can only picture it on an unshaven man
