The art of perfume marketing: how fragrance is sold

Bertrand Duchaufour is a living legend and one of the most influential "noses" of our time, whose fragrances have redefined the boundaries of niche perfumery. His story began in Nancy, in the family of a geologist, and his fateful encounter was with a girl who wore Chanel No. 19. It was this perfume that awakened young Bertrand's passion for the world of scents and determined his calling.
After training at Lautier Florasynth and gaining experience at large companies, Duchaufour quickly made a name for himself. His early works, such as Messe De Minuit for Etro and S.T. Dupont Femme, already demonstrated his boldness and originality. But L'Artisan Parfumeur became his true creative home. Starting with the iconic Mechant Loup in 1997, he created dozens of hits for the brand, including the meditative Timbuktu, the daring Dzongkha, and the seductive Traversée du Bosphore.
Duchaufour's name became synonymous with the avant-garde after working with Comme des Garçons, for which he created the innovative Mint and Calamus, as well as the famous Avignon. At the same time, his talent was also in demand in the world of luxury perfumery: he is the author of flankers for the legendary Dior Fahrenheit — Summer and 0 Degree, as well as the romantic Amarige D'Amour for Givenchy.
Since 2007, having become an independent perfumer, Duchaufour has focused on profound authorial projects. He has created exquisite compositions for Neela Vermeire Créations, MDCI Parfums, Ann Gérard, and Penhaligon's. His creations for Olfactive Studio, inspired by photography, and fragrances for Eau D'Italie and Acqua di Parma only confirm his status as a visionary.
Bertrand Duchaufour's style is recognizable: complex, often intellectual compositions with an emphasis on balsamic and resinous notes, dry woody accords, spices, and unusual mineral undertones. He masterfully balances light and shadow, creating perfumes that take you on a journey, such as Enchanted Forest. At the same time, his portfolio also includes delicate floral notes, such as in Flora Bella for Lalique.
Surprisingly, the master also works fruitfully in the mass market segment, bringing art to a wide audience. He has created real hits for the Russian brands Faberlic and Brocard: from the elegant Pont d'Or to the fabulous Russian Princess and Tsarevna-Swan. His contribution to the industry was recognized with the prestigious Perfumer of the Year award at the Russian FiFi Awards in 2017, confirming the love and recognition of fans around the world.
