Identity and Release History

Discover Jeanne Arthes Patchouli Sumatra, a perfume water released in 2010, which embodies the French magic of affordable perfumery.

This fragrance instantly catches attention with its name, referencing exotic Sumatra, and promises a journey into the world of rich, woody notes.

The brand Jeanne Arthes, founded in 1978 by Bernard Perrin, is known for making elegance and quality accessible to everyone, and Patchouli Sumatra is a vivid example of this philosophy, offering a luxurious experience at a democratic price.

Positioning and Wearability

Jeanne Arthes Patchouli Sumatra is classified as a female fragrance, but its universal character may appeal to unisex perfume lovers as well.

As a perfume water, it offers balanced longevity, ideal for daily use—from morning awakenings to evening meetings.

Although exact data on sillage and dosage are not specified, fragrances with patchouli usually have moderate to strong sillage, and we recommend starting with 2-3 sprays on the skin to assess its development.

It fits perfectly into the autumn-winter season, adding warmth and depth to your image.

If you liked this fragrance, you might be interested in similar perfumes such as Oscar de la Renta Santo Domingo, Comme des Garçons Parfums Wonderoud, and Bershka Chypre, which also explore woody and oriental chords.

Description of the composition

The note pyramid of Jeanne Arthes Patchouli Sumatra is centered around the key element — patchouli, which gives the fragrance a deep, earthy character with woody notes and a light spiciness.

The top, middle, and base notes are not specified separately, but patchouli unfolds smoothly, starting with fresh, green shades and transitioning into a warm, stable base.

This mono-note approach allows patchouli to shine in all its complexity, creating a sense of naturalness and exoticism.

Research shows that Sumatran patchouli is valued for its high quality and intense aroma, ideally suited for creating sensual, memorable perfumes.

In this release, it may be enriched with subtle accents, although the exact details of the composition remain a mystery, inviting you to personally explore its layers.

Persistence
The persistence of a fragrance is determined by how long it can be felt. It is a characteristic associated with ingredients that evaporate slowly. Persistence depends on the physical properties of the perfume ingredients—mainly their volatility and environmental factors such as temperature and humidity.

2
Sillage
Imagine a light cloud of fragrance that, like an aeroplane trail, remains in the air after your appearance. This is the sillage - a subtle or vivid imprint left by the most diffuse element of a perfume composition. The sillage can be almost invisible when it is felt only by you and those around you. Or it can be so expressive that its presence is noticed even long after you have left.

Complexity and depth
The complexity of a fragrance is the number and variety of notes that create a unique composition. A complex fragrance contains many different notes that reveal themselves on the skin. The depth of a fragrance is the richness and intensity of the fragrance. Fragrances with a deep composition include heavy and powerful notes that stay on the skin longer and affect others over long distances.

The patchouli here truly smells noble, but the longevity leaves something to be desired. Honestly though, for this price category, it's quite acceptable. Overall, the scent is not bad, but the sadness of its fleeting nature still gnaws at me 😔

This patchouli fragrance is simply unbearable. The chocolate notes, which should be delightful, actually feel oppressive and create a sense of heaviness. There's no earthiness, but that doesn't make it any better. I just can't understand how anyone can wear this. Awful!

Sumatra is just a gorgeous fragrance! Patchouli beautifully combines with spicy notes here, warming you as if under a bright sun. You can feel the wood, and vanilla and cinnamon add a special twist. The patchouli has such an interesting chocolatey nuance. This perfume is really worth the attention, I'm definitely grabbing a few bottles for the meetup 😍

There's almost nothing left in the bottle, and it's already turned a cognac shade, but that was enough to understand - I need it. Now I'm looking for these incredibly alluring patchouli notes. First, the smell of a damp, moldy basement hit my nose, and then, through that earthy dampness on my wrist, gorgeous chocolate patchouli unfolded - so tart and rich. The fragrance is truly high-quality, sounding closer to niche than to ordinary ones. If Tom Ford had continued his patchouli line, then Sumatra should have appeared after Ford's White Patchouli, only in a brown bottle
