Back to the Roots — a Return to Natural Purity

Back to the Roots Eau de Parfum by Vilhelm Parfumerie is a 2023 unisex fragrance for those who appreciate expressive green freshness, transparent floral nuances and a calm woody depth.

Its name can be understood as a return to the roots: the composition seems to evoke natural textures, damp earth, cool herbs and the soft light of white tea.

At the same time, the fragrance does not feel simple or exclusively “green” — it gradually becomes fuller, warmer and more sensual.

In character, Back to the Roots combines aromatic, green, floral and woody facets.

This Eau de Parfum has a noticeable sillage: the composition is easy to sense around the wearer, while maintaining a neat, contemporary presence without excessive heaviness.

The fragrance will appeal to women and men who prefer distinctive citrus-herbal freshness, as well as those looking for a versatile perfume with an individual character.

How the Fragrance Unfolds

In the first minutes, Back to the Roots smells cool, green and slightly spicy, creating the impression of fresh air after rain.

Then the accord becomes softer and more enveloping: floral nuances meet the purity of white tea, while the woody base adds calm and stability to the composition.

The dry-down is slightly dry, musky and natural, evoking damp wood and the smooth, warm surface of sandalwood.

This fragrance feels especially harmonious in spring and early autumn, when its green and woody nuances sound most convincing.

It can be chosen for the office, a walk, a creative meeting or an everyday wardrobe when you want to smell fresh, refined and noticeable.

In warm weather, the perfume reveals more airiness and tea-like transparency, while in cooler conditions it becomes deeper and more expressive.

The Creator and the Brand’s Style

Back to the Roots was created by Jan Vilhelm Ahlgren, founder and creative director of Vilhelm Parfumerie.

His approach is evident in his ability to unite a recognisable image with a carefully constructed olfactory story: the fragrance is perceived not as a set of individual notes, but as a complete scene with shifting light and texture.

For the brand, founded in the United States in 2015, Back to the Roots continues its characteristic work with emotional narratives and expressive contrasts.

There is no pursuit of loud sweetness or decorative luxury here; the release focuses on purity, naturalness and contemporary niche elegance.

That is why it can appeal both to fans of green compositions and to those who usually choose woody or tea fragrances.

Wear and Dosage

Its noticeable sillage unfolds gradually and helps the fragrance remain recognisable throughout the day.

For application to the skin, 1–2 sprays are enough: this allows the composition to unfold in layers without losing its transparency.

Apply 2–3 sprays to clothing, especially if you want to prolong the woody-musky dry-down.

Back to the Roots sits beautifully on the wrists, neck and behind the ears. For a softer cloud, apply it to the hair or outerwear from a distance.

Before buying it blind, consider its noticeable green dryness and damp-woody base: these qualities define the fragrance and distinguish it from carefree citrus fresh scents.

For a related fragrance to explore, consider Tiziana Terenzi Eclix, although Back to the Roots retains its own more tea-like, herbal and serene character.

Description of the composition

Back to the Roots Fragrance Notes Pyramid

The composition opens with ambrette, angelica, galbanum, and petitgrain.

The green accord receives a fresh citrusy-herbal lift, while angelica and galbanum add a distinctive cool bitterness.

Ginger, iris, violet, and white tea unfold at the heart. This combination softens and refines the fragrance, bringing together transparent tea freshness, powdery floral nuances, and a delicate spiciness.

Sandalwood, damp wood, and musk remain in the base.

The dry-down is smooth, clean, and slightly dewy, allowing the green freshness to gradually transition into a calm woody-musky scent.

Persistence
The persistence of a fragrance is determined by how long it can be felt. It is a characteristic associated with ingredients that evaporate slowly. Persistence depends on the physical properties of the perfume ingredients—mainly their volatility and environmental factors such as temperature and humidity.

Sillage
Imagine a light cloud of fragrance that, like an aeroplane trail, remains in the air after your appearance. This is the sillage - a subtle or vivid imprint left by the most diffuse element of a perfume composition. The sillage can be almost invisible when it is felt only by you and those around you. Or it can be so expressive that its presence is noticed even long after you have left.

Complexity and depth
The complexity of a fragrance is the number and variety of notes that create a unique composition. A complex fragrance contains many different notes that reveal themselves on the skin. The depth of a fragrance is the richness and intensity of the fragrance. Fragrances with a deep composition include heavy and powerful notes that stay on the skin longer and affect others over long distances.

I'm very happy to have this bottle. The composition is put together delicately: no note sticks out or irritates. The fragrance feels expensive, without a chemical edge, and develops beautifully and calmly.<br>To me, it's absolutely unisex. On a woman it smells intelligent, soft and without unnecessary toughness
