To the fragrance: Chanel Pour Monsieur

Released in 1955, Chanel Pour Monsieur is the only men's fragrance that appeared during Mademoiselle's lifetime. I fell in love with it three or four years ago, not even knowing that Luca Turin, a renowned critic, called it the benchmark for chypre. The ringing lemon with verbena and a little cardamom - that's not bad, of course, but nothing more. Sparks of ginger running through green cashmere also don't impress. But the base of forest moss, which ideally should be alluring, actually just sits there gathering dust. Restrained charm? Oh please, that's not samurai asceticism, but just a banal sense of tact. Pour Monsieur doesn't fill the room; it just exists next to its owner, as if shy. Today, this fragrance is forgotten on the bottom shelves of "Rive Gauche," just like its lyrical hero. Masculinity has changed over 60 years, and now the heroes of our time smell of sweet desserts and sea freshness
