Quality control in perfumery: how fragrances are tested

Jacques Fath is not just a perfume house, but a living legend whose name is inextricably linked to the golden age of Parisian fashion. Founded in 1937 by the visionary designer Jacques Fath, the brand quickly entered history as one of the pillars of post-war style, alongside Christian Dior and Pierre Balmain. Its perfumery, born in 1945, became an extension of the philosophy of unbridled joy of life, femininity, and exquisite simplicity that Fath preached in his outfits.
The journey of the Jacques Fath perfume line is a story of rise, oblivion, and triumphant return. After the untimely death of the founder in 1954, the fashion house closed, and the fate of the fragrances ended up in the hands of various companies. The true revival began in 2008, when the brand was acquired by the perfume company Panouge. Under the leadership of creative director Rania Naim, Jacques Fath was given new life, carefully restoring the heritage and complementing it with modern interpretations.
Jacques Fath perfumes are an ode to beauty, emotion, and the art of vivre. Jacques Fath believed that fashion and perfume should bring happiness. This life-affirming philosophy became the DNA of all his creations. The modern perfumery of the house continues this tradition, offering fragrances that do not just smell, but tell stories — bright, sensual, filled with light and color. Here you will not find heavy, dark compositions; instead — sparkling citrus freshness, delicate floral bouquets, and juicy fruity chords.
The modern brand catalog is structured into several recognizable lines, each revealing a facet of the talent of its creators. The flagship is the collection Fath's Essentials — modern interpretations of classic themes, created by leading niche perfumers. This is the foundation of the perfume wardrobe from Jacques Fath, where each composition is refined and emotional.
The line Irissime is dedicated to the king of flowers in perfumery — iris. It is a tribute to the legendary Iris Gris from 1946 and an exploration of all facets of this noble material. The collection Yin Yang offers a more playful and contrasting view, playing with the dualism of aromatic themes, such as light and shadow, feminine and masculine principles.
Among the abundance of creations from the house, there are true icons that define its style. The immortal classic — Green Water (1946), a refreshing citrus-green fougère that many consider the precursor to all modern summer fragrances. Its modern version, recreated by perfumer Cécile Zarokian, preserved the spirit of the original.
No less famous is Lilas Exquis — a virtuoso portrait of lilac, which masterfully conveys the weightless beauty of this spring flower. The fragrance was created by Anne Flipo. For lovers of sensual, enveloping perfumes, the bestseller Ellipse was created — a warm, honeyed-balsamic fountain with a tender rose at its heart.
And fans of exquisite floral classics should definitely pay attention to Fath de Fath (1953) — an elegant aldehyde bouquet that remains a symbol of unfading Parisian chic.
The quality and originality of Jacques Fath fragrances are ensured by a constellation of talented "noses." Over the modern collections, masters such as Cécile Zarokian, known for her structural and emotional compositions, and the Italian Luca Maffei, who virtuously masters the art of modern classic, have worked. The legendary Iris Gris was revived thanks to the painstaking work of Patrice Revier, and other hits were worked on by Marie Salamagne and Olivier Gillotin.
Jacques Fath holds one of the most exciting stories in perfumery. The first fragrance of the house, Chasuble (1945), never went into wide sale, becoming an instant rarity. And the story of the revival of Iris Gris in 2018 under the name L’Iris de Fath is like a detective story. To recreate the lost formula, a large-scale project was undertaken with the participation of five perfumers and experts. The winning version by Patrice Revier uses natural iris roots and jasmine of the highest quality, which, according to the brand, made it the most expensive perfume formula in the world.
Today, Jacques Fath occupies an honorable place in the world of niche perfumery, offering connoisseurs not just fragrances, but particles of history, filled with meaning and impeccable taste. Its perfumes are the choice for those seeking a unique statement and a connection to the great French tradition.
