Biography and sources of inspiration

Rodrigo Flores-Ru is not just a senior perfumer at the legendary Givaudan, but a true poet of fragrances, whose creations have become iconic for millions. His story began in sunny Mexico City, where he was born and raised, immersing himself in the rich palette of local flora. Initially studying biology, Rodrigo gained a deep understanding of natural ingredients, which later became the foundation of his creativity. In 1989, at the age of 20, he made a fateful move to Paris to enroll in the prestigious ISIPCA perfume school, where his transformation into a master began.

Career path and early successes

Flores-Ru's career began with exquisite niche projects such as Femme for Tristano Onofri and the eponymous fragrance for Daniel de Fasson. However, his global breakthrough came when he co-created the incredibly cheerful Clinique Happy with Jean-Claude Delville, a fragrance that became a symbol of the optimism of the 90s for decades. This success opened the door to collaborations with major brands, including Mary Kay (Velocity fragrance), Lulu Guinness, and Donna Karan, for whom he created the sensual Black Cashmere.

Iconic works for fashion giants

The pinnacle of commercial and creative recognition came with Rodrigo's fruitful collaboration with Tom Ford. It is his genius that is behind the bestsellers that defined the brand's image: the sunny Neroli Portofino, the passionate Jasmin Rouge, as well as their exquisite variations and the refined Fleur De Chine. At the same time, he laid the foundation for Elizabeth Arden's perfume identity by creating the fresh classic White Tea and numerous variations of the iconic Green Tea series.

Signature style: an ode to citrus

Flores-Ru's recognizable style is an ode to sunny and life-affirming notes. The perfumer himself admits that the scents of bergamot, lemon, and orange smell like happiness to him. This signature citrus accord, bright and elegant, has become the hallmark of his best works — from the sparkling Happy to the resort-inspired Neroli Portofino and the entire fresh Green Tea line, making his fragrances incredibly popular among connoisseurs.

The breadth of his portfolio and niche projects

Rodrigo's talent is universal: he easily creates hits for both luxury and mass-market brands. His credits include fragrances for Calvin Klein, Avon, Estée Lauder, and Dolce & Gabbana (Velvet line). His work with independent houses is no less significant: he has brought his aesthetic to Carner Barcelona, Santi Burgas, Wilgermain, and House Of Sillage, and has also created the Eau Fraiche collection for Yosh.

Legacy and influence on the perfume world

Rodrigo Flores-Ru is a bridge between art and commerce, between niche depth and universal love. His fragrances, such as the reissued legend Fougere Royale for Houbigant or the daring Velvet Black Patchouli, prove that true creative freedom can live in any format. Today, his name is synonymous with impeccable taste, optimism, and that very "happiness" captured in the glass and sprays of his timeless creations.
