7 Fragrances for Hot Summer: Freshness and Comfort
Summer puts perfume to the test. In the heat, even your favorite fragrance can sound different: some...
Anaïs Biguin is a shining example of how passion, multiplied by a love of literature, can give birth to a perfume legend. This French visionary, a self-taught woman who challenged industry traditions, founded not one, but three iconic niche brands: Jardins d'Écrivains, Gri Gri Parfums, and Chapel Factory. Her journey is a hymn to creative courage, which began not in a laboratory in Grasse, but among the pages of great novels.
With a degree in philology, Anaïs entered the world of fragrances through a door opened by Victor Hugo. A visit to his house-museum on the island of Guernsey in 2011 was a decisive moment: she wanted to capture the atmosphere of the place in a perfume composition. Without any formal training, she ordered a set of fragrant materials and began experimenting. Her first steps—scented candles dedicated to Colette, Tolstoy, and Casanova—attracted the attention of experts. It was her meeting with David Frossard, creative director of Les Liquides Imaginaires, that convinced her to create her own perfumes. Thus, in 2012, the Jardins d'Écrivains brand, or "Writers' Gardens," was born.
Anaïs Biguin's style is unique and instantly recognizable. Each of her fragrances is not just a set of notes, but a deep, intellectual portrait of a writer, poet, or literary character. She masterfully translates the biographies, characters, and atmosphere of works into the language of perfumery. Her compositions are often complex, multifaceted, and full of unexpected contrasts, whether it's the rebellious spirit in Howl or the melancholic elegance in George, dedicated to George Sand. This literary approach has made her fragrances particularly popular among connoisseurs who seek not only beauty but also meaning and history in perfumery.
Over more than a decade of creativity, Anais has created dozens of iconic compositions. Her bibliography of perfumery masterpieces includes the scandalous and captivating Junky, the floral-chypre Ajar, and the mysterious Orlando. Fans also adore the sensual Tara Mantra from her second line, dedicated to travel and rituals, and the meditative, woody Holy Stick from her later Chapel Factory project. These perfumes regularly top the ratings and are the subject of heated discussion in the perfume community.
Not resting on the success of Jardins d'Écrivains, the tireless Anaïs continued to explore new territories. In 2016, she launched Gri Gri Parfums, a brand inspired by magic, exotic cultures, and talismans, which gave the world such hypnotic works as Ukiyo-E and Sideshow. Unfortunately, her experiment with the Parisian gastronomic theme, the Les Cocottes de Paris brand, did not continue. However, in 2020, Chapel Factory was born — a project focused on spiritual quests, where each fragrance, whether it be the provocative Heresy or the purifying Baptisma, reminds us that for Biguin, perfumery is always a high art with philosophical undertones.
