From cello to perfumery

Benoît Lapuz is one of those masters whose biography reads like a fascinating novel about vocation. Born in picturesque Normandy, he was immersed in the world of music from childhood, playing the cello masterfully and studying at the conservatory. However, his sense of smell was searching for its own symphony, which ultimately led to a fateful meeting with legendary perfumer Pierre Bourdon. It was Bourdon who recognized the young man's talent and took him on as his assistant, opening the door to the magical world of fragrances.

Career path from Takasago to Drom

Lapouza's professional career began in 1986 at Takasago, where he honed his basic skills. In 1991, he moved to Quest International, and in 1993, he joined Fragrance Resources (later part of IFF), where he began his extensive collaboration with major brands. This experience laid the foundation for his future masterpieces. In 2014, the perfumer joined the team at Drom, where he continues to create fragrances to this day.

First major success and iconic works

Lapuz's first resounding success came in 1998 when he created a flanker for the iconic Opium — Opium Fraicheur d'Orient by Yves Saint Laurent. This work proved his mastery and opened a series of iconic fragrances. It was followed by the fresh Eau du Tsar for Van Cleef & Arpels, the playful Rococo, and the meditative Zen and Annam for Tan Giudicelli.

A multifaceted portfolio: from mass market to luxury

Benoît Lapouze's uniqueness lies in the incredible range of his work. He created fragrances for youth brands such as Mexx and Adidas (for example, Pure Lightness), while also working on exquisite compositions for luxury houses. His collaboration with Pierre Cardin was particularly fruitful, for whom he created a whole series of perfumes, including Emotion for Men, Pierre Cardin pour Homme, and the exquisite Cuir Intense and Iris Sauvage from the Collection line. His talent also gave the world the sensual Si Lolita, the seductive L'Acquarossa for Fendi, and delicate and passionate creations for Mauboussin, such as Neroli and A La Folie.

Niche collaborations and signature style

The perfumer never limited himself to the mainstream, enjoying working with independent niche houses. His portfolio includes fragrances for Les Parfums de Rosine, Parfums Grès Paris, Lola James Harper, and several releases for the Italian brand Alyson Oldoini. Lapuz's style is difficult to describe in a single word: he masterfully plays with contrasts, combining powerful oriental accords with delicate floral notes, and bright fruitiness with deep woody bases. The sunny and cheerful Soleil for Lalique and the passionate Beautiful Day Intense for Castelbajac proved that his creative potential is inexhaustible. However, the real triumph was the 2020 release of Angels' Share for the By Kilian brand. This warm, viscous composition with notes of cognac, cinnamon, and vanilla instantly won the love of the perfumery community and became one of the most talked about and beloved niche fragrances of our time, rightly considered the perfumer's best creation.
