Nicolas Mamounas

Nicolas Mamounas' journey into the world of fragrances began far from the fields of Grasse. Born in Greece, he traveled to France to study chemistry at the legendary Sorbonne. It was there, among scientific formulas, that his passion for perfumery was awakened. A fateful encounter with an experienced Grasse perfumer became his first mentor and opened the doors to the world of composition, laying the foundation for a future distinguished career.

The Rochas era

The young perfumer's moment of glory came in 1970, when he took over as the in-house "nose" of the Rochas fashion house, replacing Guy Robert himself. This appointment marked the beginning of a new, bright chapter in the brand's history. Mamounas was tasked not only with creating perfumes, but also with shaping Rochas's perfume identity for the next two decades.

Significant works and the formation of style

His first major independent work, Eau de Rochas, released in the same year, 1970, instantly became a sensation. This refreshing citrus fougère redefined the genre, adding incredible airiness and vitality. This triumph was followed by the mysterious Mystere de Rochas and the brutal, leathery-woody Macassar, created in collaboration with Roger Pellegrino. These fragrances cemented Mamounas' reputation as a master who worked virtuosically with classic structures.

The pinnacle of creativity: Lumiere and Byzance

In 1984, the world saw Lumiere, a radiant floral-fruity composition filled with the light of peach and magnolia. But the true perfume anthem of the era was the chypre Byzance, released in 1987. Luxurious, sensual, with oriental accords, it embodied all the exoticism and drama of its name, becoming one of the perfumer's most beloved and talked-about works.

New horizons and legacy

After ending his era at Rochas with the masculine leather fragrance Globe in 1987, Nicolas Mamounas did not leave the industry. His talent was in demand for other projects. He created elegant compositions for the Jean Marais brand, such as the delicate Pour la Belle, the noble Galaad, and the philosophical Arbre de Vie. His mark can also be found in the collections of Thymes, Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, and Jennica.
