Philippe Romano is a perfumer whose life has been steeped in the magic of fragrances from the very beginning. Born in the heart of the perfume universe, Grasse, on December 23, 1957, he inherited a love for this art: his father was involved in the distillation of precious neroli oil. His childhood spent under the hot Andalusian sun gave him a special sense of color, passion, and Mediterranean lightness, which would later manifest itself in his creations. His professional career began at the renowned Robertet perfume school, where he honed his craft. Romano's career at Robertet, which spanned more than two decades, was a time of global discovery: he worked in the company's branches around the world, from Brazil and Japan to the United States, accumulating a unique cultural background that became the basis for his future perfumery masterpieces.
The turning point came in 2000 when Philippe Romano moved to the international perfume company Drom. It was here, over the next twenty years, that he created his most famous and commercially successful works, becoming one of the key creators for many global brands. His portfolio is a veritable map of the perfume industry, covering both the mass market and the luxury segment. Among the brands that entrusted him with the creation of their fragrances are the bright and cheerful Escada, the exquisite Lalique, the elegant Azzaro, the bohemian Anna Sui, and the democratic Yves Rocher. He also left his mark on Roger & Gallet, Kenzo, Salvador Dali, and many others, demonstrating incredible versatility.
Philippe Romano's style is difficult to pigeonhole — he was a virtuoso who was fluent in various perfumery languages. However, his work often has a sunny, optimistic character and masterful use of juicy accords. He masterfully created refreshing fruity-floral compositions for Escada, such as the iconic Tropical Punch, Island Kiss, and Rockin' Rio, which became symbols of summer for an entire generation. On the other hand, he showed a deep understanding of oriental and woody notes, creating sensual unisex fragrances such as Sweet Amber for Lalique or the mysterious Desert Nocturne. His talent for fresh, aquatic accords was embodied in the successful Kenzo Aqua Pour Homme, and the legendary tea compositions The Vert and Eau de The Vert are still considered benchmarks of the genre.
Philippe Romano passed away in August 2021, leaving behind a rich legacy of hundreds of fragrances. His works, from the democratic floral perfumes of FlowerParty to niche explorations such as Oud Ambre Cannelle, continue to live on the shelves and in the hearts of connoisseurs around the world. He proved that it is possible to be both commercially successful and creatively daring, creating perfumes that become bestsellers and are loved by a discerning audience. Philippe Romano will forever remain in history as a perfumer who knew how to capture the brightest sun, the coolness of the sea breeze, and the warmth of a Mediterranean evening in a glass bottle.
