Who is Rei Kawakubo

Rei Kawakubo is a legendary Japanese designer, the founder and perennial creative director of the fashion house Comme des Garçons, whose influence has long transcended fashion and permeated the world of perfumery. Although she does not create the fragrances herself, her radical aesthetic and philosophy form the foundation for one of the boldest and most cult niche perfume lines in the world.

The Journey from Tokyo to the World Stage

Born on October 11, 1942, in Tokyo, Kawakubo studied art history and literature at the prestigious Keio University. After graduating in 1964, she began her career in the advertising department of the textile company Asahi Kasei, where she quickly demonstrated a talent for styling. By 1969, she had registered her own brand, giving it the provocative name Comme des Garçons ("Like Boys"), challenging traditional notions of femininity.

The Birth of the Comme des Garçons Perfume Universe

The brand's first boutique opened in Tokyo in 1975, and in 1982, Kawakubo conquered Paris by opening a store there. The perfume branch of the Comme des Garçons empire was launched in 1994. While the master perfumer Christian Astuguevieille creates the compositions, the brand's unique spirit emanates from Kawakubo. Her first and iconic contribution to perfumery was the bottle design for the debut fragrance—a smooth, streamlined "pebble," which became the line's signature and a symbol of its minimalist, sculptural aesthetic.

Iconic Fragrances Inspired by Kawakubo's Aesthetic

Under her creative direction, the perfume line Comme des Garçons Parfums releases bold, conceptual compositions that, like the clothing, break stereotypes. The cult debut was the fragrance Comme des Garçons - Comme des Garsons (1994)—fresh, transparent, yet complex, packaged in that legendary "pebble." Among other iconic creations are the avant-garde Odeur 53 and Odeur 71 with notes of hot metal and photocopy paper, the meditative Incense series, and bestsellers like Wonderwood and 2 Man.

Philosophy and Style: How the Designer's Aesthetic Shapes the Fragrances

Kawakubo's style, built on deconstruction, asymmetry, a predominance of black, and a rejection of imposed ideals of beauty, is directly translated into the perfume creations. Comme des Garçons fragrances are not merely pleasant scents but intellectual statements, often devoid of classic floral or sweet accords. They can be cold, mineral, smoky, or industrial, offering not a "pleasant" perfume to wear, but one that makes you think and feel differently.

Recognition and Legacy of an Avant-Garde Icon

Rei Kawakubo's influence on contemporary culture is difficult to overstate. In 2017, New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art dedicated its annual Costume Institute exhibition to the Comme des Garçons brand, an unprecedented recognition. Her approach to perfumery as an art form and an extension of personal space has inspired a whole generation of niche brands and connoisseurs who seek not a compliment in a fragrance, but self-expression.
