Master of the American perfume dream

Steven Demerco is the name behind the fragrances that have defined the spirit of entire generations. This senior perfumer and vice president of the giant IFF doesn't just create scents — he weaves the perfume history of modern America, masterfully balancing the world of high fashion, glossy celebrity culture, and a sincere love for niche experiments. His journey from intern at Givaudan to founder of the cult brand OK Fine Fragrances is a story of how a passion for creativity and an impeccable sense of the market create true bestsellers.

A career that began with legendary fragrances

Demercado began his professional career in 1988 at Givaudan, and his debut works immediately hit the mark. He had a hand in the men's version of Calvin Klein's iconic Escape For Men, a fragrance that embodied the freedom and spirit of adventure of the 90s. This was soon followed by his first experience in celebrity perfumery: his signature fragrance for basketball icon Michael Jordan laid the foundation for future collaborations with stars. But the real breakthrough came in 2001 with the release of Marc Jacobs, created in collaboration with Loc Dong. This elegant, understated floral fragrance opened a new chapter in perfumery for the fashion house and became a style benchmark for many years to come.

Architect of perfume bestsellers

After moving to Fragrance Resources in 2002, Demercado revealed his talent in full force, becoming one of the most sought-after "noses" for American fashion brands and celebrities. He created juicy, energetic fragrances for EscadaMagnetism and Magnetic Beat — and brought modern sensuality to the classic British house of Penhaligon's with the scent Endymion. But it was in celebrity perfumery that his genius shone most brightly. He captured the spirit of the noughties with the playful and glamorous Paris Hilton and the seductive Just Me for Paris Hilton, the languid Love at First Glow for Jennifer Lopez, and later, exquisite compositions for Nicole Richie and Jessica Simpson.

Versatility and signature style

Steven Demercedo's style is difficult to pigeonhole, and that is his strength. He works with equal virtuosity on bright, accessible fragrances for Avon (Incandescence) and Mary Kay (such as the life-affirming Dance to Life or the delicate Thinking of You), on brutal woody accords for Tommy Hilfiger, and on sensual oriental compositions for Jean Paul Gaultier. His perfumes for Victoria's Secret exude romance, while his work for Hollister (Festival Vibes For Her) captures the spirit of youth culture. However, there is one common feature: impeccable quality, commercial flair, and the ability to create memorable, emotional images that resonate with millions.

A passion for niche: the birth of OK Fine Fragrances

In 2018, with a wealth of experience behind him, Demercado took on a personal creative challenge: together with former Coty marketing director Michael Simpson, he founded the niche brand OK Fine Fragrances. This project allowed him to move away from the demands of the mass market and immerse himself completely in the art of perfumery. The brand's signature feature is the aging of perfume concentrate in oak barrels, which gives the fragrances incredible depth, softness, and complexity. Works such as the smoky SGO#501 Santal, the warm AMO#401 Amber, and the velvety Smoked Oud for Vince Camuto demonstrate his masterful work with noble materials and his love for contrasting, textured accords.

Inexhaustible inspiration and legacy

Even today, Stephen Demercedo shows no signs of slowing down. He continues to create fragrances that become hits, whether it's the patriotic America for Perry Ellis or the fresh, festive perfume for Hollister. His portfolio is a living encyclopedia of modern perfumery, with room for both daring experimentation and impeccable commercial success. Discussions of his fragrances—from the legendary Marc Jacobs to the niche creations of OK Fine Fragrances—always elicit a lively response from the perfume community, confirming Demercado's status as one of the most influential and versatile perfumers of our time.
