Acqua Gotica — Dark, Expressive Marine Depth

Acqua Gotica Parfum / Extrait de Parfum by Fakoshima Perfumes is a 2023 men’s fragrance with a noticeable sillage and a character that is hard to confuse with classic fresh compositions.

Here, the marine theme sounds neither transparent nor carefree, but dense, cool and slightly dramatic, blending with leathery, ambery and woody nuances.

This extrait is designed for those who appreciate unconventional fragrance narratives and enjoy scents that gradually change their mood.

Acqua Gotica balances salty coolness, smoky minerality, damp leather and the warm depth of tobacco, making it especially striking in cool weather, in the evening, during a walk or at an atmospheric event.

The composition was created by Konstantin Shilyaev and Yaroslav Simonov.

Their work highlights the bold side of the brand: Fakoshima began as an eccentric eyewear label founded in 2012, then expanded its creative universe beyond accessories and turned to the language of fragrance.

Acqua Gotica continues this direction — experimental, visual and impossible to overlook.

Olfactively, the fragrance belongs to the ambery, leather and marine families.

Its palette is much broader, however: aquatic, mineral, balsamic, green, floral, animalic, beverage-like and woody nuances can all be found here.

This combination makes the perfume multifaceted: it may seem salty, smoky, spicy-balsamic and slightly damp all at once.

Acqua Gotica has a noticeable sillage, so it is best to begin with a moderate application.

One or two sprays are enough for the skin, while another one or two sprays can be applied to clothing from a short distance.

The extrait develops richly and lasts a long time, while fabric can retain its dark ambery-woody nuances longer than skin.

The impression of the fragrance depends on which facet comes to the fore: sea salt creates a sense of cool air, suede adds soft sensuality, while smoke, tobacco and labdanum form a deep, almost Gothic backdrop.

This is not a universal office freshie, but an expressive fragrance for men who prefer individuality, contrast and a distinctive presence.

For further exploration, consider Agent Provocateur Petale Noir, The Spirit of Dubai Oud and Ladanika Hussars’ Ballad.

Each reveals rich, dark and distinctive accords in its own way, making them useful for comparing the nuances of leather, amber, woody materials and an expressive sillage.

Description of the composition

Acqua Gotica Fragrance Notes Pyramid

The top notes open with a contrasting blend of gin, a marine accord, oysters, smoke and styrax.

The opening is cool, salty and mineral-like, yet from the very first minutes it reveals a dark balsamic depth.

The heart of the composition features elemi, osmanthus, rose, salt and a suede accord. The floral nuances do not fully soften the fragrance; instead, they are woven into a salty, slightly damp and leathery texture.

The base is built around amber, fallen leaves, labdanum, patchouli and tobacco.

The final development becomes warm, smoky and woody, leaving a noticeable amber-leathery trail with nuances of earth, dry leaves and tobacco warmth.

Persistence
The persistence of a fragrance is determined by how long it can be felt. It is a characteristic associated with ingredients that evaporate slowly. Persistence depends on the physical properties of the perfume ingredients—mainly their volatility and environmental factors such as temperature and humidity.

Sillage
Imagine a light cloud of fragrance that, like an aeroplane trail, remains in the air after your appearance. This is the sillage - a subtle or vivid imprint left by the most diffuse element of a perfume composition. The sillage can be almost invisible when it is felt only by you and those around you. Or it can be so expressive that its presence is noticed even long after you have left.

Complexity and depth
The complexity of a fragrance is the number and variety of notes that create a unique composition. A complex fragrance contains many different notes that reveal themselves on the skin. The depth of a fragrance is the richness and intensity of the fragrance. Fragrances with a deep composition include heavy and powerful notes that stay on the skin longer and affect others over long distances.

This fragrance is built around an unusual salty aquatic accord balanced by an amber note. The result is a rather bold interplay: a cool, briny scent quickly shifts into warm, sweet amber, then returns to marine freshness. Temperature has a major effect on the development: in cool weather there is more salt and cold, while in warmth the amber comes forward.
Stylistically, this is a sultry, sweet composition with a cool mineral trail. The central oyster-amber accord is well made: it doesn't stick out, fall apart or go completely in one direction. But it barely develops afterward, so it starts to become tiring by the end.
My main issue is that the fragrance clearly aims for heavy luxury, but lacks detail. The accord itself isn't primitive, but beyond it the composition remains almost empty. There are warm, salty marine shades, floral-tea amber and even a light boozy nuance, but the execution could have gone much deeper. The central idea is good, it's just difficult for it to hold the whole composition on its own.
The second problem appeared unexpectedly. During the first few hours the fragrance was bright, dense and left a noticeable trail. I expected at least a workday, but after about four hours it suddenly weakened and became close to the skin. The accord itself remained, but the background almost disappeared, so I was already looking for a decant to reapply. A couple of hours later, the fragrance vanished completely😳. It promises a very loud scent at first, then deflates far too quickly
