Contre-Jour — a floral fragrance with character

Contre-Jour Eau de Parfum is a unisex fragrance from Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle, launched in 2026.

This eau de parfum is made for those who appreciate expressive compositions in which floral softness meets deep woody tones.

Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle has long been regarded as a house devoted to artistic perfumery and creative freedom.

Its hallmark is a focus on the perfumer’s personality and meticulously structured compositions. Contre-Jour therefore continues an important tradition of the house: using fragrance to speak not about trends, but about mood, texture and individual style.

The fragrance pyramid and its development

Contre-Jour was created by Annick Menardo, a perfumer known for creating rich and memorable formulas.

The composition opens with immortelle, whose dry, honeyed and balsamic character immediately gives the fragrance its personality and adds a sunny, slightly spicy facet.

Narcissus and rose unfold at the heart. Narcissus brings a green, cool vividness, while rose softens the composition and makes the floral accord rounder and more sensual.

As the fragrance develops, it grows warmer: sandalwood creates a creamy woody backdrop in the base, allowing the floral notes to sound especially full and dimensional.

Style, sillage and application

In character, Contre-Jour brings together floral, white-floral, balsamic and woody nuances.

Its profile will suit both women and men, while its noticeable sillage makes it particularly fitting for evenings, cool weather and occasions when you want to make an impression without saying a word.

The sillage is described as very strong, so it is best to start with a light hand. On skin, precise application is ideal: a small amount on the wrists, neck or inner elbows is enough.

For clothing, try the “walk through a cloud” technique: spray the fragrance in front of you and walk through it for a more even and gentle effect.

Who will enjoy Contre-Jour

This fragrance will appeal to those looking not for airy floral lightness, but for an expressive composition with a noticeable base and good longevity.

Contre-Jour gradually moves from dry immortelle to a multi-layered floral heart and then to a smooth sandalwood finish, making it fascinating to follow on the skin throughout the day.

If you would like to explore fragrances with a similar mood, compare it with Salvador Dali Itislove.

Yet Contre-Jour retains its own niche individuality: its strength lies in the contrast between a dry, sunlit opening, expressive florals and a soft woody aftertaste.

Contre-Jour Fragrance Notes Pyramid

The top note of the composition is immortelle, with a dry, honeyed, balsamic scent and a subtle spicy facet.

At the heart, narcissus meets rose: the narcissus’s expressive green character is balanced by the rose’s soft, rounded floralcy.

The base is built around sandalwood, which adds creamy woody depth to the composition.

Overall, Contre-Jour unfolds as a floral-woody fragrance with a balsamic accent and a noticeable sillage.

Persistence
The persistence of a fragrance is determined by how long it can be felt. It is a characteristic associated with ingredients that evaporate slowly. Persistence depends on the physical properties of the perfume ingredients—mainly their volatility and environmental factors such as temperature and humidity.

Sillage
Imagine a light cloud of fragrance that, like an aeroplane trail, remains in the air after your appearance. This is the sillage - a subtle or vivid imprint left by the most diffuse element of a perfume composition. The sillage can be almost invisible when it is felt only by you and those around you. Or it can be so expressive that its presence is noticed even long after you have left.

Very conspicuous
5
Complexity and depth
The complexity of a fragrance is the number and variety of notes that create a unique composition. A complex fragrance contains many different notes that reveal themselves on the skin. The depth of a fragrance is the richness and intensity of the fragrance. Fragrances with a deep composition include heavy and powerful notes that stay on the skin longer and affect others over long distances.

With all due respect to Frederic Malle and my love for immortelle, I can't call this fragrance beautiful or pleasant. It immediately struck me with the smell of charred wood - obviously it's immortelle - and there's no escaping it afterward. Maybe it needs long-term study: changing the dosage, smelling it in the sillage, trying it in different weather. But at first try, it's completely not for me
