Angeliques sous la pluie: freshness under the rain

In the world of niche perfumery, Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle is synonymous with creative freedom and exceptional quality, and the fragrance Angeliques Sous La Pluie, released in 2000, is a clear testament to this.

This eau de toilette, known in Russia as "Angelica under the Rain," embodies elegant simplicity and naturalistic beauty, offering a universal appeal for connoisseurs of refined compositions.

Its name evokes images of cool rain washing over green fields, perfectly conveying its fresh and natural character.

The fragrance is classified as unisex, making it an ideal choice for men and women seeking a fresh, yet unobtrusive perfume.

With a moderate sillage, it leaves a delicate trail, suitable for daily wear, office meetings, or romantic dates in warm seasons.

Its lightness and transparency make it complimentary and easily recognizable in a crowd, without overwhelming others.

For optimal development, it is recommended to apply 1 to 2 sprays on the skin and 2 to 3 sprays on clothing, allowing enjoyment of the smooth evolution of notes from a citrusy opening to a woody-musky base.

The concentration of eau de toilette provides moderate longevity, ideal for daytime use, especially in spring and summer when one desires to feel coolness and freshness.

Creative duo: Malle and Ellena

The creation of Angeliques Sous La Pluie involved two legendary perfumers: Jean-Claude Ellena, known for his minimalist and airy aesthetic, and Frédéric Malle, the founder of the brand, who aimed for transparency and naturalness.

Their collaboration led to the birth of a fragrance that reflects the house's DNA—respect for raw materials and artistic expression, emphasizing that perfume can be art accessible to everyone.

This release solidified Frédéric Malle's reputation as an innovator, offering perfumes that tell stories through scents, in this case—the image of angelica washed by rain, with hints of greenery and spices.

It stands out among other fragrances of the brand for its lightness and accessibility, showing that niche perfumery can be both exquisite and everyday.

Families and note groups

Angeliques Sous La Pluie belongs to the floral, musky, and woody fragrance families, combining tenderness, warmth, and natural strength.

Its notes fall into the groups of fruity, green, musky, and spicy chords, creating a multifaceted composition that smoothly transitions from a bright opening to a cozy finish, perfectly suited for those who appreciate complexity in simplicity.

Description of the composition

Composition Structure: Note Pyramid

The top notes of Angeliques Sous La Pluie open with a fresh chord of bergamot, juniper berries, and pink pepper, creating the sensation of a light rain washing over citrus and spicy berries, immediately energizing with vitality and optimism.

At the heart of the fragrance reigns angelica, a green and slightly bitter note that adds naturalistic depth to the composition and connects the top to the base, reminiscent of damp earth after a downpour.

The base consists of cedar and white musk, offering a warm, woody-musky finish that gently envelops the skin, providing longevity and comfort, like a cozy blanket on a cool evening.

This pyramid unfolds gradually: from a bright and effervescent start through the green heart to a stable and gentle base, making each stage a journey along forest trails after the rain.

The composition is perfectly balanced, demonstrating the perfumers' skill in creating light yet memorable fragrances that stay with you throughout the day.

Persistence
The persistence of a fragrance is determined by how long it can be felt. It is a characteristic associated with ingredients that evaporate slowly. Persistence depends on the physical properties of the perfume ingredients—mainly their volatility and environmental factors such as temperature and humidity.

Sillage
Imagine a light cloud of fragrance that, like an aeroplane trail, remains in the air after your appearance. This is the sillage - a subtle or vivid imprint left by the most diffuse element of a perfume composition. The sillage can be almost invisible when it is felt only by you and those around you. Or it can be so expressive that its presence is noticed even long after you have left.

This fragrance can be described in one word - gin. At first, it's cold and fresh, but then a sharpness appears, which quickly gives way to bitter herbs. You can feel it gradually losing its brightness, and soon only a light sweetness remains on the skin. After half an hour, it's almost inaudible, becoming quiet as if dissolving into the air. Nevertheless, I still felt it even after a shower - it didn't completely disappear. In this regard, it reminds me of Boudicca Wode The Beautiful Mind Series, but there, the longevity and sillage are much stronger. There's a lot in common in the notes, but the feeling remains sad and melancholic 😔

How can this be, huh? It's just absurd! The fragrance is gorgeous, but the longevity is a total fail!!! Sprayed a couple of times, and that's it, as if it was never there. It takes you to some gray fields, a morning after the rain, fresh air and the smell of herbs - all great, but not for long. Tranquility, merging with nature - yes, but only for 10 minutes. Then just faint hints of this beauty, as if it deliberately slips away, not letting you enjoy it. And those who can use it without worrying about longevity and price, they're lucky, of course 😤

Under the downpour, wet wood floats down a turbulent river. The water around seems to boil from the rapid drops. On the riverbanks, angelica stalks sway, as if in white crowns. A strange sensation - inhaling the scent of angry rainwater, while nearby the churning waters of the river. The wood and angelica create this rich watery landscape. The freshness and purity here come not from musks, but from the rain. Angelica becomes brighter over time, losing moisture. It's no longer the green cow parsnip from which shepherds made pipes, but dried roots. They are bitter, but with a sweet aftertaste and a velvety sensation on the tongue. The fragrance is truly beautiful and unusual. It's a shame it disappears so quickly from the skin, just like a summer thunderstorm

I really like the fragrance, it smells gorgeous, but I can barely detect it. A little wormwood, a little juniper, and that's it. There's more rain in it than obvious notes. Like a ghost scent

"Angélica Under the Rain" is a fragrance that appeared in 2000 thanks to a collaboration with Jean-Claude Ellena. The name already hints that inside the bottle lies the scent of angelica, gathered in the rain. Angelica essential oil contains exaltolide - a plant musk that has long been synthesized in laboratories and actively used in perfumery. The perfumer and creative director tried to create something special, and the result was an olfactory still life where a "rooty" scent plays the main role, somewhat reminiscent of vetiver. But the mention of vetiver is only to give a general idea of the angelica root. This "rooty" accord is wet and tart, but at the same time very delicate, as it is submerged in musk, which smooths out all sharp notes. The composition also features a light hint of Virginian cedar, and juniper sparks scatter like emerald beads.

However, there is one problem - the longevity of Angéliques Sous La Pluie. On the skin, the fragrance lasts only about an hour, and longer on fabric and hair, but there's almost no sillage. Perhaps that's why it didn't make it into the 2018 limited collection. This fragrance might appeal to those who love fresh musky notes with an unusual character. It's also suitable for those who like to change perfumes throughout the day 🌧️

The fragrance is truly atmospheric and beautiful. In rainy weather, it unfolds especially well, creating a cozy mood. I sense notes of dry herbs and wood, as well as angelica. The longevity, admittedly, isn't the highest, but it feels pleasant close to the skin

This fragrance is something special for me. At first, it seems fresh and green, and then it unfolds into a delicate floral musk. All the notes are audible, but somehow too quiet, as if they are afraid to assert themselves. The musk in the base is soft and sweetish, but it's not enough to leave a trace. I feel something fading away, and it's sad. 🌧️

The perfume lasts pretty well on me, about 5-6 hours for sure. But its sillage is a bit unstable - sometimes bright, sometimes very quiet. The fragrance is very delicate and light, as if it embraces the body, like something soothing 🌸

Oh, how I wish I could feel it on myself again. At first, it's really impressive, even a bit sharp, but then all that's left is a feeling of freshness, as if I've just stepped out of the shower. There's something special about it that evokes pleasant memories, like the scent of cleanliness. For certain moments, it's simply irreplaceable 🌧️

At first, I also thought the fragrance wasn't long-lasting. But in reality, it's so bright at the beginning that it just dulls down later, creating the impression that it disappears. Although, to be honest, it's still detectable six hours after application. Yes, in micro-sprays, it fades faster, no argument there.

As for the name "Under the Rain", surprisingly, it really fits. I've always loved scents associated with rain; maybe in a past life, I was something like an earthworm. Usually, such fragrances are too herbal or floral, but here, you sense more earth and wet tree trunks. In short, I don't know how to explain it, but there's a certain charm to it, albeit a bitter one

The perfume is fresh, green, and has a sharp character that's noticeable even in the heat. I generally liked it, but there's one nuance - you have to carry it with you constantly or apply it generously in the mornings, otherwise it's just unbearable. Even with that approach, it only lasts a few hours before disappearing. It truly has some unique lack of longevity. If anyone knows how to make its scent last longer, let me know! I don't want to part with it 😅

The fragrance, to be honest, disappears from me in 15 minutes, and I've checked. If you bring your hand to your face and sniff carefully, you can catch a barely noticeable sweet scent. If it lasted longer, I would definitely buy a bottle without hesitation, because this sweetness is truly captivating 💖
