Honestly, I've always been wary of animalic notes with dirt and organic elements, and I was initially predisposed against Promise. But, to my surprise, instead of the expected manure and damp earth, I smelled dry apple cider poured into a wooden mug lined with soft leather. Mineral, woody, amber, and fruity accords merge into a harmony that is both simple and complex. The composition sounds multi-layered, filling the space without leaving gaps. It's truly noble and exquisite.
The woody accord is built on cyperus, patchouli, and cashmeran, while sparkling apple cider adds freshness and sweetness. But the leather accord is especially interesting: isobutyl quinoline ties all the elements together, and only Dominique Ropion could make me say, “Isobutyl quinoline. That's cool.” My expectations were not met. Promise is not a murky mess with a fecal-woody smell, but a dry, transparent, and dynamic fragrance.
I've already mentioned that Promise is my favorite fragrance from the brand, even though I wear completely different ones. This is one of those cases where you want to enjoy a magnificent work without being tied to context. Who is Promise for?
