Berlin legend at the intersection of fashion and perfumery

In the world of niche perfumery, there are places for bold experiments, and the brand Verdúu, which emerged in Berlin in 2015, became just such a project. It was founded by Russian Alexander Botov and renowned photographer Bjorn Jonas, aiming to create a unique platform at the crossroads of two creative universes. The goal was ambitious and inspiring: to gather talented designers with absolutely different visions and help each of them express their individuality through a perfume composition. Thus was born not just a perfume brand, but a collective artistic project where each bottle is a manifesto and each scent is a portrait of its creator.

The philosophy of Verdúu was built on principles of collaboration and freedom of expression. Instead of following a single DNA, the brand invited designers to become full co-authors, transferring the aesthetics of their fashion collections into the world of scents. This made every Verdúu release an event anticipated not only by perfume enthusiasts but also by contemporary fashion connoisseurs. All the fragrances were united by one thing—the highest level of craftsmanship entrusted to the legendary perfumer Mark Buxton. His talent and unique style became the cementing mortar that bound all the diverse ideas into a single, harmonious whole.

Fragrance collection as a gallery of contemporary design

Each Verdúu bottle is a story of a duo. The debut scent in 2015 was Verdúu - Hien Le, created in collaboration with German designer Hien Le. Inspiration came from simple 60s-70s tennis attire, California sunshine, and the atmosphere of lazy summer. Buxton translated this into a fresh, green composition with mint, vetiver, and clean musks. In 2016, the line expanded with two polar works: the brutal and daring Goetze Gegenwart in collaboration with a Berlin streetwear brand, and the refined-nostalgic Michael Sontag, based on the scent of designer Michael Sontag's old tin soap dish.

Special attention is deserved by the scents created with British visionaries. Verdúu - Christopher Shannon (2017) is a surreal journey into the designer's childhood spent in industrial Liverpool. The composition whimsically blends mimosa, rose oil, scents of street food, and factory yards, creating a touching and slightly rough accord. In contrast, Verdúu - Matthew Miller (2018) is a powerful, almost architectural work built on the contrast of bitter galbanum, smoky incense, and spicy cardamom.

Brand style and iconic scents

Despite the diversity of themes, the Verdúu fragrances share a common style set by Mark Buxton. This includes clean lines, intellectual play with contrasts (freshness vs. warmth, transparency vs. density), and uncompromising quality of materials. Compositions often revolve around vibrant chords—green, spicy, smoky, or resinous notes—gently resting on a noble woody-musky base. The brand avoided obvious sweetness and gender stereotypes, creating truly unisex scents for a bold and independent audience.

Among niche perfume enthusiasts, Christopher Shannon and Michael Sontag are especially highly valued. The former for its unconventional, emotional complexity, the latter for its impeccable elegance and cozy leather base. Reviews often highlight their exceptional longevity and evolving trail, which changes throughout the day, revealing new facets.

Interesting facts and legacy of Verdúu

Unfortunately, the story of Verdúu was short but bright. After the release of the scent with Matthew Miller in 2018, the brand suspended its activities without announcing new releases. This makes the existing bottles truly collectible items sought after by connoisseurs. Verdúu left behind an important legacy, proving that perfumery can be as conceptual and authorial as high fashion. Each fragrance from this brand is a time capsule preserving the creative spirit of mid-2010s Berlin and a bold experiment on the very edge of art and design.
