Ben Gorham is not just the founder of the iconic Byredo brand, but a true visionary who revolutionized the concept of niche perfumery. His story is a journey from the basketball court to the heights of the art of fragrance. Born into a unique family of a Canadian artist and an Indian actress, Ben spent his childhood constantly moving between New York, Toronto, and Stockholm, which laid the foundation for his multicultural worldview.
After finishing his pro basketball career, Gorham went back to Stockholm to study art. A chance meeting with perfumer Peter Wolf at an exhibition changed his life. Hearing that scent can evoke emotions far more powerful than visual images, Ben became fascinated with the world of perfumery. He did not train as a "nose" in the classical sense, but took on the role of creative director and storyteller, translating memories and stories into fragrant concepts.
Founded in 2006, the Byredo brand has become the embodiment of Scandinavian minimalism, enriched with emotional depth and Eastern motifs. Gorham calls his creations a mixture of Swedish avant-garde and Indian soul. Each fragrance is a personal story. For example, Green is dedicated to memories of his father and Paris in the 1970s, while Encens Chembur is an ode to his mother's homeland, filled with spices and incense. It is this personal approach and collaboration with masters such as Jérôme Epinette that has created the brand's unique, recognizable signature.
The Byredo collection, led by Ben Gorham, has given the world true perfume icons, beloved by a community of connoisseurs. The incredibly popular Mojave Ghost, with its ghostly beauty and longevity, and the sunny and carefree Gypsy Water have become the brand's calling cards. Connoisseurs note the deep and languid Bal d'Afrique, the sensual Bibliotheque with its scent of old books and leather, and the fresh and elegant Blanche. These perfumes regularly top the ratings and garner rave reviews, confirming their cult status.
Gorham masterfully takes perfumery beyond its usual boundaries by entering into unexpected collaborations. He worked with the design duo M/M Paris on the provocative M/Mink, with photographers Inez & Vinoodh on the nostalgic 1996 Inez & Vinoodh, and with Virgil Abloh for Off-White to create the urban Elevator Music. But his most high-profile project was his collaboration with IKEA on the affordable Osynlig line of scented candles, which brought the high art of fragrance into everyday life.
Ben Gorham reimagined the role of the perfumer, becoming more of a fragrance architect and creative director. His influence on the industry is enormous: he proved that there can be a deep personal story behind a fragrance and that a niche brand can collaborate on equal terms with the giants of fashion and design. Today, Byredo is not just a collection of perfumes, but an entire aesthetic universe created by a visionary who boldly combined sports, art, and memory in unforgettable fragrances.
