Gilles Rome is one of those masters whose story is inextricably linked to the heart of the world of perfumery. He was born and raised in Grasse, a city where the air is saturated with the scents of flower fields, which predetermined his destiny. His father's friend introduced him to the world of perfume creation, and this step became the beginning of a long journey that would last a lifetime. His career began in the early 1970s with almost ten years of training as an assistant, where he learned the secrets of composition bit by bit, in the shadow of the greats, before going on to shine in his own right at the famous Givaudan company.

First success and iconic fragrances

His path to fame began with high-profile works for leading fashion houses. In collaboration with Michel Girard, he created the classic Cerruti Pour Homme, which set a new direction in men's perfumery. This was followed by the sophisticated Jil for Jil Sander and the passionate Wild Wind for Gabriela Sabatini. However, the true gem in his portfolio was the 1998 fragrance Hermès Rocabar, majestic and cozy. This woody composition with coniferous undertones, spicy sparkles, and delicate floral accords is still considered the benchmark of elegance and continues to win the hearts of connoisseurs around the world.

A master of different scales: from luxury to niche

Gilles Romé's expert touch was in demand in various corners of the perfume world. He worked masterfully with big names in the mass market and luxury segment, creating charismatic bestsellers such as the bold Joop! Rococo For Men and the fresh Tous Man, as well as niche brands, where he could give free rein to his creative experiments. His talent was revealed in the sensual Gian Marco Venturi Woman, the exquisite Poudre d'Epices for Sinfonia di Note, and the intellectual Silk for Andrea Maack.

In 2014, after more than 40 years of serving the art of fragrance, Gilles Rome announced his retirement, leaving behind a rich creative legacy. But his passion for creativity has not faded — it has simply changed form. Today, he has devoted himself to another love — music. Gilles Rome became part of the Quinta Ria quartet, which performs mesmerizing compositions in the bossa nova genre, proving that a true artist can express beauty in its various manifestations.
