History and Positioning

Dolce & Gabbana Velvet Patchouli is a velvety chypre fragrance launched in 2011 as part of the prestigious Velvet collection.

Named after the designers’ favorite material, this line embodies sensuality and Italian passion.

The fragrance was created for men, yet its unisex character can easily be appreciated by any woman who values deep, sophisticated scents.

The composition was created by renowned perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux, who captured the atmosphere of historic Italian churches.

It was inspired by the scent of incense wafting through churches during services.

Velvet Patchouli is more than just a fragrance—it is an olfactory journey to the very heart of Italy, where the sacred meets the secular.

Character and Scent

Classified in the Chypre family, this perfume unfolds as cozy yet mysterious.

With its soft sillage (Soft), Velvet Patchouli is ideal for intimate encounters and occasions when you do not want to overwhelm those around you.

It is a fragrance for those who appreciate subtle nuances and prefer their perfume to remain a personal secret. In its Eau de Parfum concentration, it is rich yet never overpowering.

Inspiration and Brand DNA

The Velvet collection is an homage to velvet, a material Dolce & Gabbana have worked with for years. Each fragrance in the series reflects the designers’ personal tastes and their love for Italy.

Velvet Patchouli is no exception: it combines smoky, resinous notes reminiscent of ancient traditions with a modern chypre structure.

It is the perfect choice for connoisseurs of deep, meditative compositions that do not shout, but whisper.

Perfume information

Description of the composition

The Velvet Patchouli composition is built around two key notes: Patchouli and Kephalis.

Patchouli creates a rich, earthy base characteristic of chypre fragrances, while Kephalis—a woody-amber accord—adds transparency and helps the composition linger on the skin, making its scent more complex and refined.

Together, they create a velvety, smoky, slightly sweet trail reminiscent of incense and aged wood.

Persistence
The persistence of a fragrance is determined by how long it can be felt. It is a characteristic associated with ingredients that evaporate slowly. Persistence depends on the physical properties of the perfume ingredients—mainly their volatility and environmental factors such as temperature and humidity.

Sillage
Imagine a light cloud of fragrance that, like an aeroplane trail, remains in the air after your appearance. This is the sillage - a subtle or vivid imprint left by the most diffuse element of a perfume composition. The sillage can be almost invisible when it is felt only by you and those around you. Or it can be so expressive that its presence is noticed even long after you have left.

Complexity and depth
The complexity of a fragrance is the number and variety of notes that create a unique composition. A complex fragrance contains many different notes that reveal themselves on the skin. The depth of a fragrance is the richness and intensity of the fragrance. Fragrances with a deep composition include heavy and powerful notes that stay on the skin longer and affect others over long distances.

This fragrance is definitely not masculine, that's obvious. The patchouli notes behave too softly, as if afraid to express themselves. At first, it seems fresh, but on the skin, it turns into some kind of bitter chocolate, which is not at all pleasing. No cellars or earth are felt, only disappointment 😒

The patchouli in this fragrance is really pleasing. Although it's positioned as masculine, the softness of the patchouli makes it quite versatile. You can wear it without issues, it doesn't cause discomfort, but rather creates a pleasant feeling
