Identity and Release History

Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle Bigarade Concentree is a unisex fragrance released in 2002 under the brand Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle.

In the world of niche perfumery, the name Frédéric Malle resonates as a sign of the highest quality and creative freedom.

Founded in 2000 in France by the heir to a perfumery dynasty, this house made a quiet revolution by bringing the creators' names to the forefront for the first time, and Bigarade Concentree became one of the early masterpieces highlighting this philosophy.

Positioning and Character

Classified as unisex, this perfume in the concentration of Eau de Toilette has a medium trail, making it ideal for daily wear in warm seasons — in spring and summer, it unfolds particularly brightly, offering freshness and elegance.

Its compliment-receiving nature and recognizability make it an excellent choice for those who appreciate balanced fragrances with good longevity.

Perfumers and Influence

Two outstanding masters worked on the creation of Bigarade Concentree: Frédéric Malle and Jean-Claude Ellena.

Their collaboration led to the birth of a fragrance that reflects the brand's DNA — innovation and elegance, strengthening Frederic Malle's reputation as a platform for creative experiments.

This release helped set standards for citrus and fougère compositions in niche perfumery.

Description of the composition

Fragrance Composition

The pyramid of Bigarade Concentree begins with a bright chord of bitter orange (bigarade), creating a fresh and invigorating start, reminiscent of Mediterranean gardens.

At the heart of the fragrance, spicy notes of cardamom and pink pepper (red berries) unfold, adding warmth and complexity, which smoothly transition to the base.

The base consists of cedar and hay, providing a woody and slightly sweet foundation that gives longevity and depth, finishing the composition with a cozy trail.

This combination of notes from the Citrus, Spicy, and Woody groups makes the fragrance multifaceted and engaging for discussion.

Persistence
The persistence of a fragrance is determined by how long it can be felt. It is a characteristic associated with ingredients that evaporate slowly. Persistence depends on the physical properties of the perfume ingredients—mainly their volatility and environmental factors such as temperature and humidity.

Sillage
Imagine a light cloud of fragrance that, like an aeroplane trail, remains in the air after your appearance. This is the sillage - a subtle or vivid imprint left by the most diffuse element of a perfume composition. The sillage can be almost invisible when it is felt only by you and those around you. Or it can be so expressive that its presence is noticed even long after you have left.

Complexity and depth
The complexity of a fragrance is the number and variety of notes that create a unique composition. A complex fragrance contains many different notes that reveal themselves on the skin. The depth of a fragrance is the richness and intensity of the fragrance. Fragrances with a deep composition include heavy and powerful notes that stay on the skin longer and affect others over long distances.

Citrus fragrances are simply a find! This perfume is really worth attention, the bottle is chic, and the bigarade unfolds magnificently. The other notes only emphasize its sophistication: a little spice, the freshness of wildflowers. Ellena's mastery is top-notch, and the longevity is pleasing - up to 4 hours on the skin, the sillage isn't too intrusive, but for me, it's perfect! 🍊

In 2002, Jean-Claude Ellena re-released Cologne Bigarade, but now in a more concentrated version called Bigarade Concentrée. This fragrance turned out to be more successful and better received by the public, sales skyrocketed. The original is now almost forgotten. The scent became brighter, and the bitter orange even more intense. Floral and woody notes, which used to stand out somewhat, are now simply lost in the overall blend. If they mattered in Cologne Bigarade, in Bigarade Concentrée they're just there for show.

Who needs these fragrances anyway? Everyone who loves elegant citrus scents, but wants them sweet and warm, with a sparkle, yet not without grace. They're perfect for those who wear white shirts, t-shirts, and blazers. Office workers and those in open-plan offices. In short, everyone who finds cleanliness and light sexy. The only downside is the longevity, but there's nothing you can do about that

A citrus fragrance that, honestly, isn't impressive. Lemon, yes, juicy, but hay in the base - what even is that? Positive? Don't make me laugh! You can douse yourself in it, but it just won't develop. Longevity is okay, but if you love sillage, you're in for a disappointment. There's no sillage, and it's just awful 😒

This fragrance from Malle truly stands out from the rest. I want to get a full bottle of it. The bigarade here is simply exquisite - it's oil from the peel of ripe bitter oranges. The fragrance has an oily texture, which is not surprising given its high concentration. Cardamom adds an ethereal quality, and the sharp notes of pink pepper combine beautifully with the woody base.

The fragrance is truly rich and complex. It combines the freshness of citrus with notes of green peel and plant stems. The result is something like a green cologne, but with a deeper and more layered scent. Personally, it didn't grab me, as I prefer sweeter and gourmand fragrances

How great that the weather doesn't spoil its scent! 🍃 Citrus scents often lose their brightness in cold weather. But this perfume isn't subject to such whims))) It delights with its sound any time of year. Juicy lemon with a light hint of herbs - it's simply a treasure! 🍋

At first, I was worried this fragrance would disappoint me. Usually, citrus perfumes remind me of detergents and make me feel sad. But this one truly stands out! The smell of lemon and orange here is very natural, without soapy notes or excessive greenness. And the longevity is simply impressive for such a light fragrance. This truly makes me happy! ))

On the skin, everything looks different. First, there's a bright citrus freshness, but then a soapy smell appears. After that, it's just cleanliness and freshness, as is common now. In the end, everything transitions into creamy notes. It's completely unclear to me what the author wanted to convey with their comment. Overall, everything would be fine if it weren't for that soapy note.

Although cardamom is usually not my cup of tea, it's not noticeable in this fragrance. It seems like a true masterpiece! Well, what else can you expect from Ellena? My nose caught something aquatic, like a fresh breeze, lightness and airiness. On the blotter, it's simply amazing! I want to note that I've only tested it on a blotter so far, but, as always, skin will show its true colors. I hope it will be magnificent on the skin too! In short, I'll keep testing!
