How notes combine into fragrance families

Cologne Bigarade Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle arrived in 2001 — and it was immediately clear this one was here to stay. A unisex fragrance from the citrus and fern families. Perfumers Frédéric Malle and Jean-Claude Ellena joined forces to create something truly special. The fragrance belongs to the citrus, floral, and spicy groups. The fragrance is presented as eau de toilette.
It has a delicate sillage, staying close and personal. Every application feels like a little ritual — longevity is low. Made in France. A rich, layered composition that reveals itself differently depending on your mood and the time of day.
The fragrance has low persistence and lasts on the skin for about 2–3 hours, gradually fading and smoothly revealing its main notes
A subtle trail—just a hint of fragrance
The perfume has a fresh scent that is not too intense, so it does not overwhelm those around you with strong essences
A light and elegant fragrance with harmonious richness—the perfect balance between the depth of eau de parfum and the freshness of cologne
Fragrances for spring and summer unfold with light citrus notes, floral and fruity accords, filling the composition with freshness, airiness, and a feeling of carefree lightness on warm days
The scent of Cologne Bigarade evolves as an expressive line of development, where layers reveal themselves without rush and without gaps. The style of Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle comes through from the opening to the final trail. No excess details, only what works, and the composition keeps a clear direction. Eau de toilette keeps the right density and pace of development.
From the group perspective the structure relies on Citrus, Floral, Spicy and Wood. The framework further includes Sweet.
In a unified mixed pyramid the fragrance opens as a single chord with a expressively spicy mood: Bitter Orange, Cardamom, Cedar, Hay, Pink pepper and Rose.
The deeper layers are perceived as a smooth transition from opening to trail, which preserves the scent identity through drydown.
The accord profile rests on these accords: Aromatic, Citrus, Floral and Wood without random overlap. Secondary accord layers such as Spicy expand the olfactory volume in the background. The profile is unisex, which clarifies the composition character. In longevity terms Low suggests confident staying power.
Overall Cologne Bigarade holds a coherent structure — the opening sets direction, the middle layer carries the identity, and the final phase leaves a stable imprint.

In Cologne Bigarade, only citruses and a light green tint remain, and everything else you usually expect from a cologne has simply disappeared. Instead, we get white musk, which tries to create a warm skin effect, and cedar, which adds a bit of woodiness. But this sweet, sunny citrus scent, which should bring joy, actually causes only a slight sadness. Aldehydes in the top note and pink geraniol in the middle don't save the situation, and the oily-musky accord in the finish leaves a feeling of incompleteness.
All of this creates a strange contrast between warmth and coldness that seems unable to decide. Citrus coolness and sun rays touching the skin evoke only melancholy, not joy 😔
