The art of perfume marketing: how fragrance is sold

Jean-Claude Ellena, born in Grasse on April 7, 1947, literally grew up surrounded by the scents of jasmine and essential oils. His journey from the plantations to the laboratory is a story of a love for the craft that has been passed down through generations. He created his first significant work, the hit fragrance Van Cleef & Arpels - First, in 1976, instantly attracting the attention of the industry.
Ellena's style is perfumery calligraphy. He is a master of restraint and airiness, and his creations are often compared to watercolor sketches. His philosophy is to "write scents," creating transparent yet incredibly expressive compositions. This aesthetic was evident in the iconic Bvlgari - Au The Vert, which laid the foundation for an entire line and became an icon of perfumery minimalism in the 90s.
Ellena's career is a chronicle of collaborations with the most influential names. He left his mark on Yves Saint Laurent with the daring In Love Again, and created unique compositions for Cartier and Estée Lauder. His genius blossomed in niche perfumery, where he co-created the debut collection of Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle, giving the world masterpieces such as L'Eau d'Hiver and Angeliques Sous La Pluie.
The period from 2004 to 2016 as Hermès' exclusive perfumer became a golden era for the brand. Ellena reimagined the heritage by creating delicate variations on the classics and gave the world entire universes of fragrances. The "Gardens" series, with Un Jardin En Mediterranee and Un Jardin Sur Le Nil, became the benchmark for poetic freshness. The men's hit Terre d'Hermes and the elegant Voyage d'Hermes have firmly entered the pantheon of modern classics.
Today, Jean-Claude Ellena continues to create as an independent master, collaborating with niche houses such as Laboratorio Olfattivo and Perris Monte Carlo. His best perfumes are not just compositions, but entire stories that are adored by a community of connoisseurs. From the juicy Bigarade Concentree to the sensual Elixir des Merveilles and the innovative Rose & Cuir, each of his works provokes lively discussion and admiration.
